An alcohol-drinking contest has claimed one life and
hospitalized two others in a Benin hospital.
The deceased, Famous Ogbeide, 25, and three others
were drinking different brands of hot drinks at the
funeral of their friend’s father. TheNation reports that
he emerged winner in the first and second rounds of
the contest, but failed to collect his prize of N4,000 as
he died in the hospital.
Sources said the contest was initiated by one of the
youths at the party.
The victim allegedly collapsed by the roadside after
gulping the drink. It was also gathered that one of the
victims pulled out of the contest when he began to
cough and vomit.
The police have arrested the organiser of the funeral
party who was said to have arrived Nigeria from
Malaysia the day before.
The deceased’s mother said her son told her he was
attending a funeral of his friend’s father. She added
that his father died last December. Police
spokesperson DSP Joseph Edoigiawerie said the case
was being handled by the homicide department of the
state police command headquarters, Benin City.

Soldiers Fire At Chairman Of Northern Elders Forum

The chairman of the Northern Elders Forum, Ango Abdullahi, narrowly escaped death Wednesday as soldiers opened fire on his vehicle in Bauchi.
Narrating what happened, Mr. Abdullahi said he was on his way to the Bauchi State University, Gadau, for an assignment when the soldiers attacked his car.
Mr. Abdullahi is the chairman of the Governing Council of the University.
“It was in the morning as I was traveling in my official car with my driver,” he said.
“I was going to Gad for a meeting. We had just passed the Awala Hotel roundabout when I saw a military convoy moving very slowly.
“I was trying to catch up for the meeting so my driver overtook the military convoy. The next thing I knew they opened fire at us.
“The bullets damaged the engine of the car, damaged the car that we had to park by the road side.
“The soldiers came out and were shouting angrily at us.
“They were demanding to know why we wanted to overtake them. Didn’t we know that the soldiers were exporting sensitive materials?
“That is how they just left us there and continued their movement,” Mr. Abdullahi said.
“I have never seen such a reckless act.
He said the state Commissioner for Higher Education and told him about the attack.
“The Commissioner for Higher Education called the security agencies chiefs to inform them of what happened.
“The army later sent one Captain who apologized and promised to investigate and know from which unit the soldiers are from,” he said.
When contacted, the State Commissioner for Higher Education, Ibrahim Mohammed, confirmed that Mr. Abdullahi was attacked.
The Commissioner said he was pleased with the quick response of senior military officiers, immediately he informed them of the incident.
“They all apologized to the professor and he was happy at their response but he was traumatised because his driver said a bullet nearly caught the professor, because the bullet penetrated the door where he sat.
“The car was riddled with bullets but thank God no one was hurt but the car was badly destroyed,” he said.
The Nigerian Army could not be immediately reached Wednesday.

Buhari Suffers Setback As Atiku's Camp Joins Jonathan

Barely eleven days before Nigerians head to the polls, a total of 120 groups loyal to former presidential aspirant of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Atiku Abubakar have decamped to the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP).

The decampees were received by Uche Secondius, deputy national chairman of PDP, The Cable reports.

A reception to welcome them to the camp of President Goodluck Jonathan was held for them at at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre, Abuja.

Report of their planned defection had surfaced on Monday.

According to Nigerian Tribune report, Mr Peter Ogar, the national coordinator of Renaissance for Socio-political Transformation of Nigeria, who spoke on behalf of the group during a press conference at the weekend, said the groups were convinced that there was no viable alternative to President Goodluck Jonathan.

“Having understood the event of December 10, 2014, wherein our able leader, the Turakin Adamawa, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar was through a gang up denied us and indeed Nigerians the chance to have a true option in the forthcoming presidential election.

“Accordingly, we had to take time to analyse the inner workings of the current administration under President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan and came to the conclusion that outside the Turaki, there is no better candidate within any opposition political party, hence the need for a rethink and strategic political repositioning for the sake of destiny of our great country, Nigeria.

“It is on this premise that we are today announcing our plans to declare in a grand style, the shift in allegiance and support from the old order to a more purposeful and result oriented leadership as a better alternative in the next civilian transition hence our wholehearted declaration of support for President Jonathan in the forthcoming presidential election in the country as we are deeply convinced that he has the expertise, patriotism and national zeal to move the country to the next level,” Ogar said.

Earlier, report had surfaced that Jonathan held a secret meeting with Atiku at his home in Yola, Adamawa state capital, in a bid to woo him and his supporters.

Rumours emerged last week that Atiku, who had previously dumped the PDP for the APC, was under pressure to return to the ruling party. He denied the rumour and reinstated his commitment to the opposition party.

Atiku has not been participating actively in the APC campaigns rallies. He has however continued to pledge his loyalty to the party.

The PDM, a political group formed by Atiku was said to have endorsed President Jonathan, the PDP presidential candidate. But in a swift reaction, the PDM debunked the report, saying they had already endorsed the presidential candidate of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Gen Muhammadu Buhari.

OPC Factions Clashed Over Jega

Anti-Jega Protest
Following Monday’s protest by the Oodua Peoples’ Congress, OPC, factions within the group have risen up to dissociate themselves from the call for removal of Attahiru Jega, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

Following Monday’s protest by the Oodua Peoples’ Congress, OPC, factions within the group have risen up to dissociate themselves from the call for removal of Attahiru Jega, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

OPC/PDP/Nollywood anti-Jega protests in Lagos yesterday
Sahara Reporters Media
The Gani Adams’ faction of the OPC, accompanied by members of the Goodluck Jonathan Campaign Organization, took to the streets in Lagos to demand the removal of the INEC boss ahead of the March 28 general elections.

Mr. Adams said the rally was not partisan, but a call for Mr. Jega to be removed from office.

“What we protested for was the removal of Jega over the poor distribution of PVCs in the south, registration of underage in the north and creation of additional 30,000 polling units in the north,” Mr. Adams told PREMIUM TIMES after the protest.

The OPC members, armed with guns, pocket-knives, machetes, and charms marched from the Lagos-Ibadan expressway through Ikorodu road chanting anti-Jega songs.

Some of protesters harassed motorists and passers-by while others vandalized campaign posters of political parties, particularly those of the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Last Friday, the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra, MASSOB, held similar protests across the South Eastern states of Anambra, Enugu, and Ebonyi where they accused Mr. Jega of incompetence.

On Sunday, the APC claimed it had uncovered a plot by the ruling Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, to use ethnic militias to protest for the removal of Mr. Jega.

But Mr. Adams accused the APC and Lai Mohammed, its National Publicity Secretary, of peddling falsehood, adding that Monday’s protest was peaceful.

“Nobody was attacked. Lai Muhammed should stop peddling lies against our members,” Mr. Adams said.

“Nobody touched their bill boards. It’s the most peaceful rally I have seen. Even they, APC, cannot hold a peaceful as successful rally ‎as that. As a matter of fact, over 30 Nollywood stars took part in the rally including myself.”

“Against Yoruba interest”

Another faction of the OPC responded swiftly and angrily on Monday, accusing Mr. Adams of betraying the group and the Yoruba people.

“We, the members of the National Coordinating Council of the Oodua People’s Congress, OPC, the highest ruling body of the organization, wish to disassociate ourselves from the shameful, destructive, violent and reactionary activities of the Gani Adam-led team which occurred in Lagos today,” the group said in a statement.

“What was witnessed today in Lagos was the highest level of political violence sponsored and funded by certain elements in the Jonathan government.

“Gani Adams is on his own and does not enjoy the support of a large size of our membership spread across the country. He is working for the sponsors of violence against our people who want the March 28 elections not to hold. Unleashing terror on innocent citizens and killing them is not the way of democracy. It is not our idea of a people-oriented advocacy.”

In 2013, the Mr. Adams-led faction of the OPC secured a lucrative contract from the federal government to secure crude oil pipelines in the South West.

At the time, Mr. Adams justified the contract by claiming that President Jonathan had also awarded similar contracts to Niger Delta militants and that the OPC deserved its share.

“For a group that has been doing a lot of things for the society free of charge, it is not too much to apply for a security job,” Mr. Adams had said.

Monday’s meeting of the OPC faction was attended by Shina Akinpelu, Monsuru Akande, Sunday Adebayo, Kilanko Oladipupo, Kehinde Ogunyale, and Gbenga Eegunlusi.

In its statement, the faction accused Mr. Adams of being on “dubious project” and using the pipeline contract from the government as an excuse to recruit people to work for Mr. Jonathan and PDP in the South West.

“Gani Adams is acting against Yoruba interest. The compromises he has made amounts to selling the Yoruba to the present government for a piece of Pipeline contract to line his pockets,” the group said.

“OPC is not about pipeline contracts or any other contracts for that matter. The Yoruba interest is beyond contracts. We seek justice and fairness from the current government.”

The group called on Yoruba sons and daughters to join them in condemning Mr. Adams and his “anti-democratic tendencies.”

“We must renounce him and remind him he cannot sell the Yoruba race to Jonathan and PDP on the cheap. He also has no authority to speak on behalf of the Yoruba people,” they said.

“We pity those who rely on him to win votes. They will be sorely disappointed. Their investment is a bad one already. We reject today and always any attempt to use our organization and its members for narrow and selfish partisan purposes.

“We must remind them that the Yoruba people cannot be hoodwinked by sweeteners. No one should expect them to kow tow to an individual who is a Lilliputian in the political development and history of the Yoruba nation.”

While renouncing Mr. Adams and his activities, the group also renounced other Yoruba sons and daughters who are playing roles inimical to the welfare and interest of the South West.

“We call on our people to be vigilant politically at this time. Nigeria needs a new leadership, a new direction and a country that works.”

Tinubu Confesses He Betrayed Nuhu Ribadu To Help Jonathan In 2011

frontline leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, at the weekend confessed he betrayed his own candidate for President Goodluck Jonathan in the 2011 presidential contest.

Bola Ahmed Tinubu
In that contest, Mr. Jonathan was in competition with General Muhammadu Buhari of the Congress for Political Change, but also with Nuhu Ribadu, the former chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, who was the flagbearer of Tinubu’s Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN).

Curiously, while the candidates of the ACN did very well in the legislative and gubernatorial elections, Ribadu was trounced in all but one of the ACN States by Mr. Jonathan.  Observers have always suspected that Tinubu, who was known to have flown to Abuja to meet with the president just before the election, was bought off to give victory to Jonathan in the area.

Speaking at Onikan Stadium during an Ndigbo APC governorship rally on Saturday, Tinubu appeared to confirm those suspicions.

"In 2011, I helped Jonathan become President because he made us believe he was a breath of fresh air,” the APC boss said.  “I didn't say because he was from Bayelsa that I would not help him. We voted for him because he promised to make our lives better. But now, he has failed us."

In the speech, Tinubu appeared to have forgotten he did not belong to Jonathan’s Peoples Democratic Party in 2011, and that he had a candidate in the race that was not told ACN was voting for Jonathan. Ribadu campaigned on the ACN platform until the end.

On Saturday, Tinubu urged the Igbo in Lagos not to permit the politics of tribe and religion to influence their vote, and that they should support the APC so as to continue to reap the dividends of democracy.

"Igbo have lived here for years, and nobody has discriminated against them,” he said.  “No one would fight them because they are based in their land. No one can determine the tribe or family where he is born; it is only God that can do

Zlatan Ibrahimovic Ordered Out Of France

Calls mounted Monday for action against Paris Saint-Germain’s temperamental star striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic over comments he made about his host country which one French minister called “insulting”.
Far-right National Front leader Marine Le Pen said that Ibrahimovic, who apologised within hours of his outburst after Paris lost 3-2 at Bordeaux, should leave France
The Swedish striker, who was controversially sent off in the Champions League game against Chelsea last week, had scored twice to twice level the game.
But he stormed off the pitch and said in front of television cameras: “In 15 years, I have never seen such a referee. In this shit country, this country does not deserve PSG. We are too good for this country.”

Ibrahimovic
The 33-year-old Swedish international backed down after France’s Sports Minister Patrick Jenner called the remarks “insulting.” Jenner later welcomed Ibrahimovic’s apology however.
“I would like to apologise if anyone felt offended. I want to make it clear that my remarks were not directed at France or the French. I was talking about football, I lost the match and I accept that but I don’t accept when the referee does not follow the rules.
“I expressed myself when I was upset and everyone knows that in these moments, the words surpass the meaning.” Ibrahimovic said in a statement.
Jenner said it was the statement of “a great champion” but the apology did not calm the controversy.
“Those who consider that France is a shit country can leave it,” Le Pen told the France Info radio station.
Jerome Guedj, a leading Socialist party politician, called the remarks “unacceptable”. “Let him play football and shut up, or at least be respectful of this country, the football supporters who were also insulted.”
Ibrahimovic, who has just returned from one two match suspension and will be suspended for the Champions league quarter final for his sending off last week is likely to face sanctions from the French league.
Sloppy defending inflicted the defeat which left Paris two points behind leaders Lyon and two ahead of third place Marseille.
Ibrahimovic had equalised twice for Laurent Blanc’s side, who remain in the hunt for four trophies, but Diego Rolan popped up in the 89th minute to steer the ball home when the central defence collapsed.
Blanc meanwhile said his side had struggled for fitness and motivation after their victory in London.
“We did something special on Wednesday and everyone is talking about it which is normal but to play 10 against 11 for 90 minutes against a team like Chelsea leaves its mark,” said the coach.

BREAKING: Gunmen Attacks APC Leaders

Addressing a press conference in the aftermath of the crisis on Sunday, APC leader in Obokun/Oriade Federal Constituency, Mrs Dupe-Ajayi Gbadebo told journalists that the attack was carried out on the order of the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party for Osun East Senatorial seat, Prince Francis Fadahunsi

All Progressives Congress logo
An ardent supporter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr Agunbiade Bukola, was shot by gunmen this weekend during its campaign rally at Ilase in Obokun Local Government Area of Osun State. The victim, we gathered, is currently on a danger list at the Wesley Guild Hospital, Ilesa.

Daily Sun also gathered that the attack was reportedly carried out by members of the opposition party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), when APC organized a campaign rally in Ilase and Ibokun towns to be attended by Governor Rauf Aregbesola.

An eyewitness account also revealed that Aregbesola and his entourage had gone to pay homage to the Ilase monarch when the crisis started, adding that several APC members were also injured, while posters of contestants, APC flags and the podium on which the governor was to address the gathering were also damaged.

Addressing a press conference in the aftermath of the crisis on Sunday, APC leader in Obokun/Oriade Federal Constituency, Mrs Dupe-Ajayi Gbadebo told journalists that the attack was carried out on the order of the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party for Osun East Senatorial seat, Prince Francis Fadahunsi.

The APC chieftain, however, disclosed that members of the party (APC) had been able to identify the attackers and gave their names as Oguntade Blessing, Semiu Lamidi, Abiodun Fayawo and one Kazeem.

Mrs Gbadebo also said that during the attack, hoodlums reportedly shot into the air sporadically to scare the waiting APC crowd before freely destroying the flags, posters and the campaign podium.

In the melee, she added, people had to scamper to safety as the PDP thugs had a field day unleashing mayhem on innocent people.

According to her, the APC had petitioned the Commissioner of Police, Abubakar Morafa. The petitioned signed by its lawyer, Barrister Abdul Rasaq Adeoye, urged the police to investigate the matter.

She added: “We had set up our beautifully decorated podium for the campaign and we had moved to the streets to welcome the governor, Mr Rauf Aregbesola, when the PDP thugs stormed the venue, shot our members and disrupted the event. The thugs were sponsored by Prince Francis Fadahunsi who wants to be a senator by all means.”: “Prince Fadahunsi had earlier issued an ultimatum to our people that anybody that would not vote for him must vacate this town. We need protection and that is why we are calling on the police and other security agencies to do their job,” she added.

However, Prince Fadahunsi has debunked the allegation and accused APC thugs of using the covering of the governor to unleash violence on PDP members in the area.

Fadahunsi who spoke through his campaign organization spokesman, Mr. Sola Olowoye, insisted that he did not sponsor the attack on APC members. He added that the APC was rather seeking to cause trouble in the town because they are aware that their party is not popular in the area.

His management said that Ruggedman’s show was going smoothly and the turn up was loud. As a matter of fact, Super Eagles player. POLITICS: Tinubu Is Treacherous , Fayose Warns North

Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has accused a former Lagos State governor, Bola Tinubu, of treachery , saying, “The North should know that Tinubu’s support for (Muhammadu) Buhari is a Greek gift.”
Mr. Fayose described the former governor as a politician who would sell out anyone to achieve political gains. He said Mr. Tinubu was not honest in his support for the Mr. Buhari, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC.
“Knowing Buhari’s age, state of health and mental capability, Tinubu is only using him to achieve his target of high-jacking power from the North,” the controversial Ekiti governor said
Speaking through his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, Saturday, Mr. Fayose said, “A man who could sell out his own party candidates can sell out anyone given the right prize and political gains.
“Tinubu said with his own mouth at Onikan Stadium, Lagos on Saturday that he was instrumental to the victory of President Goodluck Jonathan in the 2011 general elections.
“He said: “In 2011, I helped Jonathan become President because he made us believe he was a breath of fresh air.”
The governor added that the implication of Mr. Tinubu’s statement was that he sold out the Action Congress of Nigeria, presidential candidate, Nuhu Ribadu, in 2011.
Mr. Fayose said Mr. Tinubu did the same thing to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar under the Action Congress in 2007.
“That to me is treachery and on this issue of Buhari and the March 28 presidential election, I am saying again that the North should beware!” Mr. Fayose said. “The North should know that Tinubu’s support for Buhari is a Greek gift. Tinubu only wants to corner the economy of Nigeria, using Buhari because he knows that he (Buhari) is weak and even at 41, his military government was ran by his deputy, Tunde Idiagbon.
“Therefore, now that the Almighty Allah has made Tinubu to confess that he traded off Ribadu in 2011, I am calling on our brothers and sisters from the North to beware of this political mercenary.”

2015 Polls: Fayose's Plan To Arrest Ekiti APC Leaders Exposed

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti State has raised the alarm over alleged plan by Governor Ayodele Fayose to arrest the party leaders before presidential election slated for March 28, 2015.
A statement by Publicity Secretary, Taiwo Olatubosun, said the party had discovered that the governor’s plot to use trumped-up charges to incarcerate the leaders to take them out of circulation in order to cripple the party’s mobilization efforts‎ for victory.
He said to achieve the plan, thugs in police uniforms would be unleashed on the opposition to cripple mobilization of voters and create fears in the minds of APC members to enable PDP have a field day during the elections.
“After it became clear that soldiers would no‎t be allowed to be deployed for the polls, PDP leaders in Ekiti State have opted for the police. They have discovered that the fake army uniforms they sewed would be useless and they have started sewing police uniforms for their operation,” Olatubosun explained.
He added that the young men in six 18-seater buses imported into the state at night about three weeks ago with military uniforms in their luggage were still the same personnel PDP wanted to use for the operation, including invading the polling booths to destroy results not favourable to PDP.
Reminding the governor that he does not have monopoly of violence, the APC spokesman said party members would use all legal means, including civil actions, to defen‎d their votes against any invaders on election day.
“We want to send a strong warning to Fayose that it is not going to be business as usual this time around. He did his worst during the last governorship election‎ when the Nigerian Army personnel deployed to Ekiti State helped him to supervise election rigging. Details of the criminal conspiracy are being heard around the world over that despicable act. We have learnt our lessons and he should be told that APC members are prepared for the worst of his plans.
“We will never get ourselves involved in criminalities but we will defend our votes by all means legal and civil. Let Fayose know that as he is planning for his rigging, we are also planning to defend our votes. If he believes he can’t survive without bending the law, we will show him that upholding the law by defending our votes remains the only way to make democracy work,” Olatubosun said.
He urged the police authorities not to be compromised, saying that siding with a party in political contest was a recipe for the break down of law and order.
“The filthy activities of the Nigerian Army in the last election have incensed Nigerians to take their fates in their own hands on matters of electoral contests. If anybody feels he can use the police to manipulate these elections, that person should be prepared to confront the anger of the masses.
“We therefore warn the governor against any plan to‎ rob Ekiti people at the polls. We call on the security agencies to rein in the governor against any nefarious activities while we call on our members to be vigilant and be ready to defend their votes during election.
“We also say in clear terms that APC members will resist illegal arrests being planned by PDP leaders. Ekiti State is not a jungle for all illegal plans by PDP. For the first time since Fayose has been riding rough-shod on the APC members and Ekiti people in general, our people armed with the law of Nigeria will ‎vehemently resist any plan to constrict their voting right to elect leaders of their choice,” Olatubosun said.

2015 Polls: Why we dumped Jonathan for Buhari —Itsekiri leader

Ideh said this was because President Jonathan had failed the Itsekiri nation and other ethnic groups across the country.

He added that Nigerians would vote enmasse for Gen Muhammau Buhari.

Ideh, in a statement made available to Punch on Saturday, said the recent return of Buhari from the United Kingdom had put an end to the lull in the political space and served as a reassurance of the candidate’s ability to garner Itsekiri votes for the APC in Delta State.

He said, “The outcome of the election will affirm the Itsekiri’s massive support for a Buhari presidency. Jonathan has failed the Itsekiri people through denial of economic empowerment and demonstration of ethnic jingoism.

“The President, in November last year, was supposed to have come to perform the groundbreaking of the $16bn Export Processing Zone at Ogidigben, which is an Itsekiri community, but refused to do so 48 hours to the event, because of protests from the Ijaw community led by an ex-militant, Government Ekpemupolo (aka Tompolo), who told the President that his security could not be guaranteed if he
dared to come.

“Nobody from the presidency thought it fit to come and give any explanation. It is now that elections are around the corner and the tempo seems to be favouring Buhari that the President thought he could quickly come and visit Olu of Warri and give explanations. We feel he is giving too much credence to ethnic considerations because the instigated protest was coming from his people.”
