How The Zulu King Triggered South Aftica's Xenophobic Attacks
According to latest reports, it was Zulu King Godwill Zwelithi’s utterances on March 23rd that triggered the Xenophobic attacks in South Africa and he had refused to retract his words, even after realizing the implications of his utterance. He’s still holding his ground that every foreigner should go back to their countries but tried to save face by saying attacking the foreigners is not how to chase them away. He is however saying that he’d expect that the government to do it legally.
During a speech in March 2015, Zwelithini called for the deportation of foreign nationals living in the country, saying it was unacceptable locals were being made to compete with people from other countries for the few economic opportunities available. King Zwelithi said “foreigners must pack their bags and go home”.
His three major arguments and why he wanted foreigners to go were; 1. SA traders in the townships said they could not compete with the prices that foreign-owned businesses were selling their products. 2; foreigners involved in crime. 3. Lack of respect shown by foreigners to locals.
Addressing Pongolo community members during a moral regeneration even, Zwelithini accused government of failing to protect locals from the “influx of foreign nationals”.He said;
“Most government leaders do not want to speak out on this matter because they are scared of losing votes. As the king of the Zulu nation, I cannot tolerate a situation where we are being led by leaders with no views whatsoever.
“We are requesting those who come from outside to please go back to their countries. The fact that there were countries that played a role in the country’s struggle for liberation should not be used as an excuse to create a situation where foreigners are allowed to inconvenience locals. I know you were in their countries during the struggle for liberation. But the fact of the matter is you did not set up businesses in their countries,” he said.
His comments were widely condemned with the SA DA describing it “highly irresponsible’ ‘Particularly given the recent spate of xenophobic attacks in South Africa, he should do the right thing – retract and apologise,”
Instead of issuing an apology, his spokesman went on record to say the King had nothing to apologize for, that he meant every word he said.
“I think the people who’re complaining are misinterpreting his speech. He didn’t say foreigners must be attacked or harassed. The king was talking about foreigners who are here illegally. Some are involved in serious crimes like drug and human trafficking. We don’t need such people in our country so the king is right.” His spokesman said

Ondo Deputy Governor Blast His Boss Mimiko
Ondo state is back in the news over the 11th hour defection of Governor Olusegun Mimiko’s deputy, Ali Olanusi.
Olanusi defected from the Labour Party to the All Progressives Congress about 48 hours before the governorship elections of April 11.
Mimiko had earlier left the LP in October 2014 when he defected to the Peoples Democratic Party, alongside his commissioners.
However, the deputy governor was left out of the mass defection, and as a result, he waited for a crucial moment to also jump ship, this time, to the APC.
Ever since, a quiet and slowly building storm has been brewing between himself and Mimiko.
In a new interview with Punch Newspapers, Olanusi questions Mimiko’s right to be upset with his defection, owing to the fact that he blazed the trail in the defection-department.
Below is an excerpt from the interview, where the deputy governor explained the rationale behind his action.
“When Mimiko wanted to defect to PDP, I was here in Akure. He had been in Abuja for two weeks at the time. Early in the morning around 4am, the governor called me and asked where I was, I told him I was on my bed, he said alright and that he just wanted to hear from me. About three hours later, that should be around 7 or 8am, the Chief of Staff called me.”
“I asked where he was calling from and he said he was in Lokoja. I asked what was happening, he said he thought the governor had sent for me, that he was on his way to Abuja to go and defect to PDP. Defect? That was what I wanted to do since last year. February last year, I wanted to return to the PDP, Mimiko pleaded with me that I should not.”
“I stayed back. He went there, he defected with his commissioners. I only heard of it in the news. When he came back, I thought he would give reasons why he did not consult me but he did not say anything or mention it at all. I called him and complained to him. I told him what he did wasn’t right. I asked him why he would go to Abuja to defect to PDP without letting me know.”
“One of the party officials even said I was not a member of PDP because when Mimiko defected with his commissioners, I was not there. It dawned on me that this action was not by mistake; it was deliberate. He said I was no more useful or relevant. I gave him 48 hours. After all the maltreatment he had given me, I said alright, I defected to APC since he did not even want me in PDP. He defected from LP to PDP while I defected to the APC. I don’t know why he is annoyed.”
13 Political Parties Pulls Out Of Bayelsa Assembly Polls Today
No fewer than 13 political parties in Bayelsa State, including the All Progressives Congress, have pulled out of the postponed State House of Assembly polls scheduled for Saturday (today).
Alliance for Democracy, Labour Party, Social Democratic Party and Democratic Peoples Party are among the remaining 12 political parties boycotting today’s poll.
The parties, under the aegis of Coalition of Political Parties in Bayelsa, said at a press conference in Yenagoa, on Friday, that they took the decision to boycott the polls because INEC had allegedly colluded with the Peoples Democratic Party to rig the polls.
The Independent National Electoral Commission had last week rescheduled elections in eight constituencies in the state.
The Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mr. Baritor Kpagih, had named the affected constituencies as Ekeremor Constituencies 1, 2 and 3; Kolokuma/Opokuma constituencies 1 and 2; Sagbama constituencies 1 and 2; and Southern Ijaw Constituency 1.
Kpagih had explained that the shift in the affected constituencies in four Local Government Areas of the state was in agreement with the stance by stakeholders that no election should take place in the constituencies without full complement of ballot papers.
The communiqué signed by chairmen of the 13 political parties alleged that INEC had entered into concrete agreement with the ruling PDP in the state to undo other political parties.
The parties said, “Their ploy is to hoard all the sensitive electoral materials – result sheets inclusive, such that after the conduct of the election with the non-sensitive materials, the INEC staff, the electoral officer of the eight local governments and other ad-hoc staff in the state will converge on designated places to enter their manufactured results into the original result sheet in favour of the PDP.
“The PDP had perfected an illicit arrangement to use the military to intimidate, harass and muzzle other candidates and genuine voters in a ploy to influence the election in favour of the PDP.
“The PDP intends to repeat their manipulative tendencies as experienced in the recently conducted state Assembly elections where INEC manipulated the result in favour of the PDP.”
The parties also alleged that armed military men were guarding the INEC staff, the EOs and ad-hoc staff while they illicitly entered fake results into the original results.
They said in the previous polls, armed military men were shooting sporadically in a deliberate bid to intimidate the electorate during the election.

Ondo Strange Disease: Government Set Up Emergency Services, Quick Response Lines
its effort at containing the spread of the strange illness ravaging the Ode Irele community of the state, the Ondo state government has set up emergency task teams and a Situation Room to coordinate the response teams working from the frontlines.
The state Commissioner for Health, Dayo Adeyanju, said in a statement Friday that five emergency response task teams have been raised to handle different aspects of control mechanisms.
The task teams are:
1. Contact Tracing Committee – the committee is already tracing and establishing contacts with those already exposed to patients or dead bodies and monitoring them for possible manifestation of any of the symptoms.
2. Case Management Committee – this is made up of health personnel and volunteers already trained to attend to medical emergencies of this nature. They are to ensure safe and proper management of new and existing cases of the illness. They are required to also train health workers in Irele.
3. Laboratory/Forensic Committee – to establish the etiological/causative agent for the strange illness and ensure safe disposal of corpses.
4. Community Education & Mobilization Committee – intensify mass education and sensitization of the community and the state in a way that will not constitute public health hazard.
5. Print, Electronic & Social Media Sensitization Committee – to make progress report of unfolding developments available in a timely manner to the world to dispel rumours that may lead to widespread panic and fear.
Mr. Adeyanju added, “These and other measures have been put in place to ensure the safety of lives of our dear people of Irele. Let us continue to exercise calm and caution and eschew fear mongering as there is manifest evidence that the situation is being contained.

APC Raises Alarm Over May 29 Handing Over Date
It appears that the All Progressives Congress, APC is uncomfortable with the May 28 handover date proposed by the out-going administration.
Punch Newspaper is reporting that the outgoing President Goodluck Jonathan and the President-elect, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) are set to clash over a proposal by the Jonathan team to hand over the mantle of leadership to Buhari on May the 28th, instead of the 29th.
The Newspaper gathered that the Buhari team was already suspicious over what they considered as an act of ill-will laced with sinister motives.
This is sequel to an announcement by the Minister of Information, Senator Patricia Akwashiki, that President Jonathan would perform the handover ceremony at a dinner on May 28.
Akwashiki made the announcement after Wednesday’s Federal Executive Council meeting.
She told journalists, “By May 28, the President intends to have the formal handover done at a dinner so that we can reserve May 29 for the incoming government.”
However, since the return of democracy in 1999, the traditional date for the handover of power has been May 29, which is also observed as Democracy Day.
This tradition has been the vogue for the past 16 years. It also presents an opportunity for the outgoing President to formally present the instrument of authority to his successor in the full glare of members of the public, local and international media, as well as foreign dignitaries.
A top member of the All Progressives Congress, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak to the media said, “It is simply not acceptable, we are rejecting it, it is a trap.”
He explained that from a security point of view, it could be considered a trap.
“How can anyone explain a situation where an outgoing president and his team will conveniently excuse themselves from an event where they are supposed to play a role when the President-elect and the Vice-President- elect are supposed to be present?” he queried.
According to the party chieftain, power abhors a vacuum as such, the constitution does not envisage a situation where Nigeria will be without a sitting President even for one hour.
He said, “If Jonathan hands over on the 28th, who accounts for the hours before the morning of the 29th when the Chief Justice of the Federation is to administer the oath of office and the oath of allegiance?
“What if there is even a sinister motive to this whole saga? As the President of the nation; who will still be the Chief Security officer until he hands over, there is no excuse that is strong enough to excuse him from the event.”
When contacted, a member of the Buhari campaign team, Mr. Rotimi Fashakin, said while he was not privy to any meeting on the subject yet, it was only logical to ask Nigerians not to rest on their oars until total liberation was achieved.
He described the announcement by President Jonathan to hand over a day earlier than was due as a ploy to rubbish the gains made with the historic win by the opposition APC.
Fashakin said, “It (the proposed handover on the 28th) portends ill for the political destiny of this nation.
“That statement is loaded and it shows that the Nigerian people should not rest yet that there is still ominous signs which we should never take for granted. If Jonathan truly said he is handing over on the 28th it presupposes that he will be absent on the 29th.
“Number one, if he hands over on the 28th to the President-elect, does Gen. Muhammadu Buhari start to act effectively on that date? The answer is an emphatic NO.
“GMB does not start to act on that date, if you get what I mean. Handing over to GMB on that date is not only meaningless, it is stupid. It has no meaning in law, or reality. It means that for 24 hours before GMB takes over there will be a vacuum.”
He further argued that on the side of morality, Nigeria borrowed its constitution substantially from the American Constitution, and as such, it should learn a thing or two about how it operates.
He said there was never a time in recorded history where an outgoing American President, who is hale and hearty, will absent himself from the handover ceremony of his successor no matter their political differences.
Drama As Man Leaves Hospital With Police Escort After 17 Girlfriends Appearance
When a man from China’s Hunan province got into a car accident last month, he never knew it would be the beginning of even bigger problems in his life. Hospital staff contacted his loved ones after he was rushed in and shockingly seventeen women turned up at the hospital, claiming to be his girlfriends. The man, whose last name is Yuan, had been seeing all of them secretly, swindling them of large sums in the process.
According to telegraph.co.uk, most of the women are from Hunan province and the oldest is 40 while the youngest, a student, is 19. Yuan was married to one of them but had a child with another. When they came to know the truth, all 17 of them were left in total shock.
“I was really worried when I heard that he was in the hospital,” said Xiao Li, Yuan’s girlfriend of 18 months. “But when I started seeing more and more beautiful girls show up, I couldn’t cry anymore.”
The women’s claims led to a full-fledged police investigation, open a can of worms on the deceptive life of Yuan. The man milked his wife of about $40,000 before divorcing her. He then proceeded to meeting several other women, fleecing them of thousands of yuan in the process. Apart from the 17 women he was seeing in real life, his WeChat account revealed that he had over 200 female targets online.
Once these incriminating details were out in the open, Yuan actually had to leave the hospital early with a police escort to protect him from his scorned girlfriends. With no job or relationship, the man has returned to his hometown to start a new life. He would soon be charged for criminal offence and fraud by the police in China.
Ondo Strange Disease, Death Toll Reach 17
Three more persons have died from the strange disease that hit Ondo recently, bring the death to seventeen.
Ondo State Governor, Dr. Olusegun Mimiko, on Friday in a broadcast, has however given the assurance that his administration was on top of the situation and so there was no need for panic.
In a broadcat message sent out hours ago, he said, “In all, 17 deaths have been confirmed in Ayadi community and Ode Irele township and all the deaths were preceded by symptoms of sudden blurred vision, headache and loss of consciousness.
“Our investigations thus far have been in conjunction with our development partner, the World Health Organisation and report sent to Nigeria Centre for Disease Control. The symptoms in this situation are not peculiar to any known epidemic and so have remained largely confounding.
“As we speak, there are no new cases reported in the last 48 hours and none presently in the hospital. We have deployed trained volunteers for active surveillance and case management should the need arise.
“Also, advocacy and sensitisation efforts are ongoing in print and on electronic media.”
According to Mimiko, cerebro-spinal fluid, blood and urine specimens have been taken for examination, and that preliminary results have not detected any known viral infection.
The governor said, “We have ordered toxicology test, we have commenced active surveillance through the local government area disease surveillance and notification officer. We await final laboratory results to be able to fully apprehend and finally surmount this challenge.”

Senator Owie To Buhari: Avoid Obasanjo To Succeed
Senator Rowland Owie, former Chief Whip of the Senate, has advised President-elect, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (rtd), to avoid former President Olusegun Obasanjo, if he desires to succeed as Nigeria’s leader.
Owie, who gave the advice in a statement yesterday in Benin City, Edo State, said:
“To Buhari, I thank God for you, but you must deliver on your promises and also build on what President Goodluck Jonathan did. Above all, you must run far from Obasanjo. If he can’t control your government, he will fight you.
He has done it to all former Presidents of Nigeria and even against MKO Abiola who
was not sworn in. Never discuss with Obasanjo unless you have at least two of your aides present.
Half way into the tenure of President Jonathan, Obasanjo started trouble making by naming presidential and vice-presidential candidates. First, it was Governor Sule Lamido as president and Governor Rotimi Amaechi as his deputy. A respectable Lamido, a founding father of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP while Obasanjo was in prison, was being urged to fight PDP.
OBJ lured most PDP governors in the North into rebellion against PDP to destroy the platform that gave all of them relevance, including OBJ. The hate mood in the North for this election against Jonathan was such that, any candidate from the North would have won the election.
The anger was that power must return to the North. Nigerians can see that rebellion against one’s own and betrayer of one’s party doesn’t pay.

Continuing his statement, Owie took the opportunity to call on PDP members across the country to wake up so they can all rebuild the party.
“When Our Lord Jesus Christ was crucified and buried on the Good Friday, nobody, apart from the mother, the Blessed Virgin Mary, knew that Christ would rise from the grave on the third day. PDP shall rise again,” he said.
SA Xenophobic Attack Latest: Kenyans To Be Evacuated From SA
Kenyan Cabinet Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Amina Mohamed, said on Friday that Kenya would evacuate its nationals from South Africa as xenophobic violence increases.
She said on Friday in Nairobi that though there were no Kenyan casualties in the uproar in South Africa, government was planning to evacuate those it could get hold of.
Mohamed said the evacuation had become necessary because of the fear that the attacks may spread across the country.
According to her, this measure will be taken after a new spate of violence has left at least five people killed in the eastern port city of Durban.
Some foreign-owned shops in Johannesburg’s downtown area have reportedly shut this week amid the fears, with the police maintaining a heavy presence in the city.
Mohamed said some Kenyans living in the affected regions, mostly business people, had moved to temporary camps provided for victims, but not in large numbers.
She said the Kenyan Mission in South Africa was ready to offer assistance to any Kenyan national who may be adversely affected.
“Kenya’s official figures show some 450 Kenyans are in Durban, mostly in the city centre,” she said.
Meanwhile, organisers of protest march against xenophobic attacks in South Africa said on Friday in Lusaka, that police had cancelled the protest.
Miles Mukumbuta, Chairperson of the organisers, said they planned to march to the South African and Zimbabwean Embassies and present petitions.
She said police cancelled the protest due to short notice given by the organisers.
Zambian laws demand that police be notified five days before any public protest could be conducted.
“We demand that our leaders in Africa act decisively over what is happening in South Africa to ensure such does not repeat itself.
“This is because we live in a global village and therefore should be each other’s brother’s keeper,” she said.
The organisers of the march dubbed “Black Friday” hailed the hundreds of Zambians that had continued to express interest in joining the march.
Lusaka Police Commanding Officer, Charity Katanga said the law on public assembly required that police were notified five days before the planned date.
She said this is to enable the Service prepare adequately to police the procession.

SA Xenophobic Attacks Latest : Attack Spreads To Downtown Johannesburg
JOHANNESBURG
Twelve people were arrested overnight as anti-foreigner attacks in South Africa spread to parts of downtown Johannesburg, police said Friday.
"Twelve suspects were arrested for trying to break into foreign-owned shops," said police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Lungelo Dlamini.
It was the latest incident in a wave of immigrant-targeted violence that began earlier this month in the port city of Durban, leaving at least six people dead.
According to local reports, the protesters from a local hostel demanded foreign nationals leave South Africa, setting cars alight and clashing with police.
No injuries were reported, said Dlamini.
The scene remained tense Friday morning, with hostel-dwellers telling reporters they wanted immigrants to know they were not welcome in the country.
President Jacob Zuma has condemned the violence in parliament.
"No amount of frustration or anger can ever justify the attacks on foreign nationals and the looting of their shops," he said Thursday night.
Locals and African immigrants in South African often compete for scarce jobs, making them a target for violence and intimidation.
Early this year, foreign shopkeepers in and around Soweto, south of Johannesburg, were forced to vacate their premises after violence and looting broke out.
In 2008, 62 people were killed in xenophobic violence in Johannesburg townships.

Following attempt to impeach the Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, the Organised Labour in the state has declared half day total shutdown in Ado Ekiti today, in solidarity with the state governor.
Members of the organised labour, under the auspices of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC) and Joint Negotiating Council (JNC), gathered at the popular Fajuyi Park Resort centre yesterday where they declared Friday a work-free day for workers of the state civil service.
The organised labour also placed embargo on human and vehicular movements within Ado Ekiti metropolis from 6a.m. till noon.
Addressing journalists, the unions which spoke through the Chairman of the NLC, Com Ayodeji Aluko, warned the political class against heating up the polity, lamenting that the breach of public peace had also been coming from a few elites and certain political group which sees the state governorship as their sole right.
Meanwhile, in a letter signed by Chief Afe Babalola (SAN) and addressed to the Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Hon Adewale Omirin, he begged the lawmakers to sheathe their swords for the state to move forward, as he commended the lawmaker for accepting the Supreme Court judgement that validated Fayose’s election in the June 21 governorship election.
Also a group called Ekiti Justice Group (EJG), had, while addressing journalists on the same issue, described the action of the former Speaker of the assembly, Dr Adewale Omirin, directing the Chief Judge of the state, Justice Ayodeji Daramola, to constitute a probe panel against Fayose as bizarre, ignoble, irresponsible and downright unlawful.
EJG called on the CJN to prevail on Justice Daramola not to allow his respected office and personality to be dragged unduly into any illegality and the murky waters of politics.
Aluko, who rued attempt by 19 APC lawmakers to impeach Fayose, lamented the sporadic shootings noticed at the House of Assembly a couple of weeks ago, when members of the PDP had to occupy the Assembly to forestall Fayose from being impeached, saying his members would have been killed, but for providence.
“As critical stakeholders, we deem it fit to make a clarion call to all Ekiti indigenes home and abroad to project the need for peace and stability in our state. We want to implore our politicians to embrace the true precepts of democratic practices by imbibing the principles of sportsmanship.
Aluko said the consistent restiveness being witnessed in the state could be ascribed to political intolerance on the part of the political gladiators, adding that the scenario is denting the image of the State among the comity of States.
However, EJG said in the letter signed by its National Coordinator, Mr Gbenga Babawibe, and addressed to the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Mahmud Mohammed, who is the chairman of NJC that “Omirin is still contesting the legality or otherwise of his impeachment in Suit Nos FHC/ABJ/CS/885/2014 and FHC/L/CS/1823/2014, respectively, and a decision is yet to be delivered on same.
“It is elementary that once an action is subjudiced, a party to the suit is not expected to take any action capable of overreaching any decision the Court of Law may make in relation to such a suit.”
The letter read further that: “We are aware that following the Inauguration of Fayose as the governor of the state on October 15, 2014, some members of the state House of Assembly abdicated their responsibility as elected assembly men, which led to the impeachment of the former Speaker, Omirin, and some other principal officers of the assembly.”
Meanwhile, a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja yesterday adjourned to April 29 for the hearing of the suit seeking to stop the All Progressives Congress (APC) members of the Ekiti State House of Assembly from initiating impeachment proceeding again the Governor, Ayodele Fayose and his deputy, Kolapo Olusola.
Before adjourning the matter, the trial judge, Justice Ahmed Mohammed, however warned the parties in the suit to steer clear of any action that could cause trouble or chaos in the state.
He further stated that any party that discovered that the other was making
moves to foment trouble should bring an application before the court.
The plaintiffs, the Speaker of the House of Assembly (described as being occupied by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) factional Speaker, Olugbemi Joseph Dele); Ekiti State House of Assembly, Fayose and Olusola through their counsel Ahmed Raji (SAN), had approached the court via a motion ex-parte seeking to halt impeachment moves against the governor
At the last adjourned date, the court ordered the defendants in the suit, the APC factional speaker of the House of Assembly, Omirin, and the Chief Judge of the state, Justice Daramola to appear before it and show cause why the plaintiff’s request should not be granted.
When the matter came up yesterday, plaintiffs’ counsel informed the court that the defendants had not yet filed any process.
Responding, the defendants counsel, Terence Venber, told the court that his clients were served last Saturday, which was an election day and that was still within the three days allowed by the rule of court for them to respond.
Giving a short ruling, the court noted that since April 11 was an election day, it would be deemed to be a public holiday and the service of the process would take effect from the next working day, from which the three days provided by the court rule would start counting.
It was on that note that court adjourned to enable the defendants file and serve their response.
Apart from Omirin and Justice Daramola, other defendants in the suit are the Inspector General of Police (IG), Mr. Suleiman Abba, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
In the ex-parte application, the plaintiffs had urged the court to grant an interim injunction setting aside the impeachment notice already served on the governor and the deputy and also restraining the defendants from taking any further steps in the impeachment moves.
They also argued that the act by Omirin to issue an impeachment notice and serve same on the governor and the deputy governor as Speaker of the House of Assembly amounted to impersonating the incumbent Speaker.
The plaintiffs also urged the court to grant the prayers and make the interim injunctions to subsist pending the determination of their motion on notice for interlocutory injunctions seeking the same set of prayers.
Raji urged the court to grant the prayers “in the interest of justice, public order, peace and safety of the people of the state”.
However, the judge in his ruling, rather than granting the interim injunctions, ordered the parties to appear in court to convince the court why the plaintiffs’ prayers for interim injunction should not be granted.
According to the judge, “The order is hereby made directing the 1st to 4th defendants (Omirin, IGP, INEC and Ekiti CJ), to appear before this court on April 16, 2015 and show cause why the interim order sought by the plaintiffs via an ex parte motion dated April 7, 2015 should not be made by this court.”
The court also granted leave to serve Omirin and Justice Daramola, who reside in Ekiti State, outside jurisdiction.
It also ordered that Omirin and the Ekiti State Chief Judge be served through advertisement in a national newspaper, while making a separate order that the Chief Judge be served with processes of court through the office of the Chief Registrar of the Ekiti State High Court.
In the main suit, marked FHC/ABJ/CS/302/2015, the plaintiffs are seeking nine prayers among which is “an order setting aside the purported notice of impeachment and all steps taken by the 1st defendant (Omirin) with other errant members of the 2nd plaintiff (Ekiti State House of Assembly) in relation to the purported issuance and service of the said notice of impeachment for the purpose of commencing and concluding the impeachment proceedings against Peter Ayodele Fayose and Dr. Olusola Kolapo, except and until there is absolute compliance with provisions of section 36(1) and section 188(1), (2), (3) and (4)
of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).”
They also want an order prohibiting the 1st defendant (Omirin) and other errant members of the 2nd plaintiff (Ekiti State House of Assembly) from further taking any step, or engaging in unlawful activities relating to the impeachment of Peter Ayodele Fayose and Dr. Olusola Kolapo, except and until there is absolute compliance with provisions of section 36(1) and section 188(1), (2), (3) and (4) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
In addition, the plaintiffs want an order prohibiting the Chief Judge of Ekiti State from taking any step or action in relation to the request of the 1st defendant (Omirin) for the purpose of appointing a panel of seven persons to investigate and purported allegations of gross misconduct against Peter Ayodele Fayose and Dr. Olusola Kolapo, except and until there is absolute compliance with provisions of section 36(1) and section 188(1), (2), (3) and (4) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

“You need to have a nation before you can have an ambition. It should always be the nation first. You don’t have to scuttle national progress for personal ambition.
“Since I assumed duty, I have been involved in quelling political crisis in some African countries and I know what they passed through and what some are still going through. If you scuttle a system for personal ambition, it becomes a collective tragedy,’’ President Jonathan declared.
Mr. Jonathan urged world leaders and international institutions to give their fullest possible support to the incoming administration of Buhari.
He also called on all Nigerians to do their utmost best to help the incoming president succeed in leading the country to greater heights of accomplishment.
The president appealed for patience, understanding and cooperation, which, he said, Mr. Buhari will need to move the country forward to greater, peace, security and progress.
Speaking with the new French ambassador, Denis Guaer, President Jonathan urged France to extend the support and assistance it gave to his administration to Mr. Buhari’s government.

“The United Nations has been supportive as well. Our troops, supported by regional forces, have done very well in fighting the terrorists in recent times. What we need now is support to help our people get back their lives,’’ he said.
The ambassadors commended President Jonathan for setting a record of humility, patriotism and courage in safeguarding the democratic process in Nigeria and Africa.
“Nigeria is not only an economic power in the world today, but also a great democratic example. And it is all by your effort, Mr. President. The last elections and your response was truly a great achievement and you will always be remembered for it,” the French ambassador told the President.
Mr. Guaer, the new Ambassador of Senegal, Baboucar Sambe, and the new Ambassador of Ethiopia, Samia Zekaria Gutu, who were at the Presidential Villa to present their letters of credence to President Jonathan, also assured him that they will do their best to strengthen relations between Nigeria and their countries during their tenure.

Still More Problems As Fayose's Petition To Stop Impeachment Declined
A Federal High Court in Abuja again declined petitions by Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti State to stop the impeachment proceedings initiated against him and his deputy, Kolapo Olusola.
Justice Ahmed Mohammed, during the Thursday’s proceedings, delivered three bench rulings, two of which rejected Fayose’s petitions to halt the impeachment proceedings.
The court after rejecting Fayose’s ex parte application for interim injunction on April 8, 2015, again refused to grant same when another request for it was made on Thursday.
The court also refused to grant a separate prayer made by Fayose’s counsel, Ahmed Raji (SAN), for an order directing parties to maintain the status quo.
The attempts made by Raji to obtain an order stopping the impeachment moves were resisted by the embattled Speaker of the House of Assembly, Adewale Omirin, who was represented by his counsel, Terence Vembe.
Vembe had appeared in court in response to an order of the court made on April 8, 2015, directing Omirin and other defendants in the suit to show cause why the impeachment moves should not be stopped by the court.
Rather than granting the order of injunction during the previous proceedings, Justice Mohammed had ordered the defendants in the suit, including Omirin of the All Progressives Congress, to appear in court on Thursday to show cause why the court should not grant the plaintiffs’ prayers.
Apart from Omirin, other defendants in the suit, who were all ordered to appear in court on Thursday, are the Inspector General of Police, Suleiman Abba; the Independent National Electoral Commission, and the Chief Judge of Ekiti State, Justice Ayodeji Daramola.
But only Omirin and INEC were represented by their lawyers on Thursday. Both the Inspector-General of Police and the Chief Judge of Ekiti State did not send lawyers to represent them in court.
Vembe argued that the service through a publication in Tribune newspaper of Saturday, April 11, the day governorship and House of Assembly elections held nationwide and as a result of which movements were restricted across the federation, was incompetent.
But Raji urged the court to overrule Vembe as he could not canvass any argument on the issue of service orally without filing any paper to back it up.
In his ruling, Mohammed sustained Raji’s objection to Vembe’s argument.
But Vembe further argued that despite the court’s earlier order directing his client to appear in court on Thursday, he was still within time to show cause why the injunction sought by the plaintiffs should not be granted stating that by virtue of the rules of the Federal High Court, his client was entitled to at least three days to respond to an order to show cause.
He added that the service, having been effected on the day of elections, which was deemed as a public holiday, the service was only effective from the next working day which was Monday, April 13.
He argued further that the rules excluded the day of service from the counting, and thus his client’s time would start running from Tuesday, April 14.
Raji objected to this argument citing Order 48 Rules 3 of the Federal High Court Rules.
But the judge in the second ruling agreed with Vembe that the day the order was published was a public holiday and the publication ought not to have been done on that day.

Lagos Sanitation: Court To Decide Movement Restriction Application Tomorrow
Federal High Court in Lagos has fixed Friday(tomorrow) to rule on an application by the Lagos State Government, seeking to suspend the enforcement of the judgment that lifted the ban on citizens’ movement during the monthly sanitation exercise.
Justice Mohammed Idris fixed the date on Thursday after the Lagos State Solicitor General, Mr. Lawal Pedro (SAN), had canvassed an argument in support of the motion for stay of execution of the March 16 judgment, which voided the movement restriction policy.
Idris had, on March 16, declared the movement restriction policy as illegal and a violation of sections 35 and 41 of the Constitution, which preserved the citizens’ right to personal liberty and freedom of movement.
Though the judge did not overrule the sanitation exercise, he held that Lagos State and its agents lacked the legal backing to arrest or detain any citizen found moving during the exercise as there was currently no law to that effect.
“I have no doubt that the restrictions imposed on the movement of persons and sanctions meted out to those who breach them are clearly unsupportable in law and unjustified.
“I must state loud and clear that the environmental sanitation exercise is not in itself unlawful, but what is unlawful and unconstitutional is the restriction imposed by the respondents during the exercise,” Idris had held.
But Lagos State Government had since lodged an appeal against the judgment.
The state’s Solicitor General, in a further affidavit, insisted that the judge did not consider or exhaust all the relevant provisions of the law before arriving at his judgment.
“We were able to show exceptional circumstances in our further affidavit; we exhibited a law, which, I must concede, was not brought to the attention of the court; the court would have been more comfortable while arriving at its judgment, if that law was brought before my Lord,” Pedro said on Thursday.
He made reference to and read Section 28 (1) and (2) of the amended Enviromental Sanitation Edict of 1987, which empowered the police, a sanitary officer or a member of the then Military Task Force to arrest without a warrant any person “found roaming about without lawful excuse within such specific period,” when any normal communal or other civic obligation directed by either the state or Federal Government was supposed to be observed.
Pedro further likened the movement restriction policy to what obtains during the general elections period, saying though, he was not aware of any specific law that said movement must be frozen during elections, peculiar circumstances necessitated the policy.
In opposition, the respondent/applicant, Mr. Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, had asked the court to refuse the application for stay of judgment execution, saying Lagos State had a perchant for disregarding court judgments.
He said the state had been known for undermining the authority of the court and accused the state of deliberately delaying hearing in its own appeal against Idris’ judgment.
But one Quduz Lawal, deponent to Lagos State’s further affidavit, debunked the claim, saying, “I specifically deny the allegation of the respondent that it is the trade mark of the 3rd-6th respondents/applicants to always disregard judgment of courts.
“There has been no enviromental sanitation exercise in Lagos State since the judgment of this court was delivered on 16th March, 2015.
“I also deny that the applicant intends to delay the hearing of the appeal against the judgment of this honourable court.”
Idris reserved judgment till Friday.

Tinubu Is My Role Model - Buruji Kashamu
Senator-elect and a chieftain of the
Peoples Democratic Party in Ogun State, Chief Buruji
Kashamu, has described the National Leader of the All
Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu, as his role
model.
Kashamu, who is the chairman of the Organisation
and Mobilisation Committee of the PDP in the South-
West, paid a rare tribute to the former Lagos State
governor in an open letter, describing Tinubu as a true
hero to be emulated by every Nigerian.
Kashamu is the senator-elect of Ogun-East senatorial
district and one of the most vocal opponents of the
APC before the party won the presidential election of
March 28.
He said that it was important to honour those
deserving of honour now that elections are over.
In the open letter addressed to Tinubu, Kashamu said,
“Truth be told, men like you are made up of sterner
stuff and are rare to come by in every generation.
Little wonder you are called the Asiwaju and Jagaban
of Borgu. I doff my hat.
“I hope that in spite of our membership of different
political platforms, we would be able to collaborate
for the upliftment of Yorubaland in particular and
Nigeria as a whole.
“My sincere prayer is for the Almighty Allah to keep
you and give you good health and long life to be able
to see the Nigeria of your dream. For me, I join other
Nigerians in wishing you the best, even as we aspire
and pray Almighty Allah to make us – the younger
ones – be like you, the Jagaban of Borgu.”
Kashamu described Tinubu as the architect of modern
Nigeria, who, he said, made history by leading an
opposition party for 16 years and then grabbing power
at the centre.
He noted that without Tinubu, the President-elect,
Muhammadu Buhari, would not have won the March
28 election.
He said, “Although I now belong to the opposition,
your achievements transcend political divides and I
am not ashamed to publicly acknowledge them. There
is no denying the fact that your place in the history of
the Yoruba race in particular, and, in Nigeria in
general, is well etched.
“The fanatical support that the President-elect,
General Muhammadu Buhari, enjoys in his homestead
was matched with your commanding influence in the
politics of the South-West and indeed the Yoruba race
to produce the results we witnessed during the
elections.
“By your sheer wit and unwavering commitment to
democratic ethos, true federalism and economic
prosperity, you led the Alliance for Democracy from a
one-state party to a regional party and now a national
party that is about to form the government at the
centre.”
Buruji, who sued former President Olusegun Obasanjo
last December over a controversial book authored by
the ex-President, also congratulated Obasanjo and
Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun.
He promised Amosun that he would ensure that the
nine PDP senators in the Ogun State House of
Assembly give him maximum cooperation.

The Peoples Democratic Party on Wednesday expressed confidence that it would effectively dislodge the All Progressives Party from power in four years time and reestabilsh its dominance in the nation’s political horizon.
Olisa Metuh, the party`s National Publicity Secretary, stated this while speaking with journalists at the end of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) meeting.
The meeting was the first after it lost the presidential election to the APC.
He reassured PDP members across the country that the NWC had put machinery in place to re-engineer and re-focus the party, in keeping with the collective determination to consolidate its support base in states of the federation.
Mr. Metuh said this was with a view to regaining power at the centre in 2019 “since it is obvious that the APC lacks what it takes to effectively lead the nation’’.
The party also alleged that the All Progressives Congress (APC) was trying to destabilise it by planting moles within its fold.
“We have noted that while some members have left our party, others have been asked to remain to cause disaffection and disharmony to destroy the spirit of unity in the party,’’ Mr. Metuh said.
He said the NWC noted some divisive statements by certain elements within the party, who were being enticed by extraneous factors and other parties to cause disharmony in its ranks.
Mr. Metuh cautioned against such comments and urged party members with genuine grievances to direct such through the appropriate channels within the party in line with the provisions of its Constitution.
He said following the party’s perceived poor performance at the just-concluded elections; it would meet with its governors and senators-elect on April 21.
Mr. Metuh said the party`s leadership would also meet with its members elected into the House of Representatives on April 22.
He said the party`s state and zonal chairmen had been directed to come to the meeting with “list of irregularities in the conduct of the elections in their areas”.
Mr. Metuh said this was to enable the party have a holistic view of what transpired during the elections and for it to come up with its final decision on its conduct.
He said the NWC reviewed certain developments arising from the 2015 general elections and resolved to resist any attempt to subvert the people’s will.
The spokesman added that the NWC also resolved to resist any attempts to tamper with the democratic process with the aim of denying its candidates their well-deserved victory at the polls.
He called on INEC and security forces to ensure that the elections in states where it was declared inconclusive were free, fair and credible.
The PDP spokesman said that every effort must be made to resist the intimidation and blackmail by the opposition aimed at manipulating the process in its favour.
He urged the party members, particularly those in states where elections had been rescheduled or declared inconclusive, not to despair, but remain focused.
Mr. Metuh said the NWC would continue to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with them until the party`s deserved victory was achieved.
He said the PDP had already received reports from Nasarawa State on results from a ward collation center in Karu Local Government Area.
Mr. Metuh alleged that in Karu, the PDP senatorial candidate was leading with about 8,000 but the votes were cancelled by INEC.
He said INEC cancelled the result on the ground that the Collation Officer was unable to reconcile the figures from the ward.
Mr. Metuh alleged that instead of ordering the collation officer to properly reconcile and re-present the figures, INEC reversed the 6,000 votes polled by the PDP candidate by hurriedly declaring the APC candidate winner with about 2,000 votes.
This, according to him was in clear violation of the Electoral Act which did not provide for cancellation of results based on unreconciled figures at the collation level.
