Why Genevieve And Omotola No Longer feature in Nollywood

When last did you watch any Nollywood film featuring either Genevieve Nnaji or Omotola Ekeinde? Am sure your answer would be like 2 or 3 years now or even more.

Well, there is no doubt that Genevieve and Omotola are the biggest stars in Nollywood. The former was recognized by Oprah while the later was recognized by Times magazine. But the fans of both actresses are worried that they no longer see these stars in recent Nollywood movies been released as they seem to have gradually gone into oblivion.

Well the main reason why they no longer feature in recent films is because they are too expensive such that producers can’t afford them again, so they rather go for cheaper actresses. The amount each of the two actresses charge can be used to produce and package Asaba Nollywood movie with some money remaining for the producer. Another reason why Genevieve and Omotola are no more regular in films is because they seem to have outgrown the Asaba films because most of the Asaba produced films are not of Standard and these actresses cannot ruin their brand with anyhow films, so they are too choosy in picking up roles.

Nevertheless, these actresses still need to feature in films if they must remain relevant. Obi Emelonye in a recent interview suggested that these two actresses should start producing their own films and featuring themselves in them, so as to remain relevant, and I totally agree with him.

Exposed! Police Officer who Demanded For Dollars Bribe From American

Another police officer has been filmed while negotiating a bribe. The incident apparently took place last week. An American citizen was stopped at the Monument bank premises in Egbeda, Lagos, for wearing green cargo trousers – which is considered to be a military outfit. The whole exchange was recorded secretly by what seems to be a camera disguised as an electronic cigarette. In the almost four-minute long video, the yet-to-be-identified armed policeman demands more U.S. dollars from the Americans, even suggesting going to the currency exchange bureau himself to convert the naira to dollars. The police officer had a rifle with him. At some point in the video, he threatens to take the Americans to the police station should they refuse to pay: “Bring better thing, that one is not money, I don tell you finish o!” he can be heard saying.
The video has gone viral since it was posted on the Youtube video channel

Thugs Attack Mushin, kills Pregnant Woman, Daughter

Gunmen on Monday night stormed Amodu Street, off Akala Street, Mushin, Lagos State, killing an eight-month pregnant woman, Musili Bello, and her 12-year-old daughter, Suliat Olowu.

It was learnt that a commercial motorcycle rider, identified simply as Baba Monday, was also shot to death in the operation which was said to have lasted for about 20 minutes.

Our correspondent, who visited the scene on Tuesday, observed that the thugs riddled several houses with bullets and also vandalised some vehicles.

The slain woman’s father, Tajudeen Odusanwo, revealed that his daughter was shot in the stomach and in the face, while his granddaughter was shot in the head.

He said, “Between 9.30 and 10pm, my daughter and granddaughter were getting ready to close the shop when some armed thugs from the railway line stormed the street and started shooting sporadically.

“They shot my granddaughter in the head while my daughter, who is eight months pregnant, was shot in the stomach and in the face.”

Relatives of the  deceased were seen crying when our correspondent visited their residence.

A relative, who did not identify herself, said, “Suliat (Olowu) was our baby. She was very intelligent and we used to call her Suliat kan, Aiyetoro kan. Her mother, Musili, even though pregnant, had been praying and fasting because she had been warned that something evil might happen.”

When our correspondent visited the third victim’s house, his family members were said to have taken his corpse to the mortuary.

The Area D Commander, ACP MD Garba; the Divisional Police Officer, Alakara Police Station, Anthony Okosun; the Officer in charge of Baker Unit, CSP Waheed Ayilara; and the Divisional Police Officer, Mushin Station, Fidelis Okafor; were with about 30 policemen in the area.

The police officers commiserated with the victims’ families and promised to beef up security in Mushin.

Residents, who came out in droves, urged the police to ensure that the culprits were brought to book.

A trader, Olabisi Shodiya, said, “We have been living in fear for too long. Last night, when they stormed our area, many of us hid inside the gutters with our children in order to avoid being hit. We can no longer sleep with our two eyes closed and we want the police to save us.”

An eyewitness, who craved anonymity, said the attackers came from Fadeyi and Ereko streets.

He said many of the culprits had been arrested and charged to court last year for murder but were released under controversial circumstances.

“The guys that invaded our streets were Oriyomi, aka Muda; Lanre Pumping, Mufu Magnet, Sars, Apdul, Monsuru 50 cent and Aglar,” he said.

It was learnt that Oriyomi and Lanre Pumping had been declared wanted by the Lagos State Police Command, while Aglar had been arrested by the Alakara Police Division.

When our correspondent left the area around 2.30pm, it was observed that policemen had set up three pin-down points in the area.

Policemen from the Anti-Terrorism Squad, Alakara Division and the Area D Command were seen patrolling the adjoining streets of Alhaji Lasisi and Akala.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Braide, who confirmed the incident, said the police authorities in the state would focus more on the area, with the intention of removing criminals and criminalities there.

She added, “For now, we have arrested five suspects in connection with the incident. More will still be done to fish out the culprits.”

Cross Country Transport boss In Efcc Net Over N82.85 M Scam

A Lagos High Court in Ikeja has fixed February 6 for the arraignment of a major transport firm, Cross Country Limited, and its Chairman, Mr. Bube Okorodudu, for stealing N82.85m.

They were charged along with Car Link Limited by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission with nine counts of stealing, conspiracy to steal, forgery and uttering.

The EFCC alleged that the accused conspired among themselves and stole the money, being proceeds of alleged fraudulent sale of 17 units of Volkswagen transporter buses belonging to AG Moeller Limited.

The anti-graft agency filed the suit, with charge number, ID/2679C/13 and dated August 1, 2013, before Justice Lateef Lawal-Akapo.

According to Mr. Francis Usani, who signed the charges on behalf of the EFCC, the accused stole the money between February 13, 2008 and August 14, 2009.

Those the EFCC claimed the buses were fraudulently sold to were GMT Nigeria Ltd; Multichoice Nigeria Ltd; and Law Union and Rock/TFS Finance Ltd.

The accused were said to have forged and “uttered” a document titled: ‘Nigeria Customs Service Motor Vehicle Duty Certificate’ with number A008911777 to facilitate the alleged stealing.

The alleged offence was said to have contravened section 390 of the Criminal Code Cap. C17 Vol. 2 Laws of Lagos State of Nigeria 2003.

The prosecution claimed that other offences of forgery and uttering violated provisions of Sections 467 and 468 of the same law.

Omotola Jalade Criticized By Fans Over New Song

Criticisms has continued to trail Nollywood star actress, Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde’s singing ability, following the release of her new single, Barren Land, off her second album titled: Me, Myself and Eyes. This came on the heels of her recent interview with CNN, where she was played up as a multi-talented actress, singer and philanthropist. Though this is not the first time her songs have been be subjected to criticisms, the mother of four, unlike actress Genevieve Nnaji, has been unperturbed. Interestingly, arguments on the social media have, however, shifted from a critical review of Omotola’s song, as fans of both actresses are now comparing their talents and celebrity status. Genevieve appears to have given up singing, after her first album, One Logologo Line, turned out a commercial failure. In the views of her fans, the star actress had taken a right decision. While commenting on Omotola’s latest single, a fan who faulted it for excessive auto tune and bad vocal, said, “I’m a huge fan of Omotola, but the song would have been better as instrumental (no vocals). Does she not have people around her to tell her she cannot sing and that she needs to stick to acting? Love you, Omosexy.” Another fan was quoted to have said that “All I can hear is auto tune! After all these years of vocal lessons… Stick to acting alone, love.” In the same vein, another fan said, “I love Omotola, but singing is not for everyone… If she was my mom, I would tell her NO! You can tell she can’t sing. So much auto tune; it is offbeat. And she is singing with her nose. I am crying of laughter as I am typing this. The song has a good message. Omowumi should have sung this, featuring MI. Even Genevieve’s I go kick you make you cry song was better than this (laughs).” However, some believe that the fault is not totally that of the actress, but the producer’s. “She (Omotola) should have gotten Cobhams to do the song for her. He is a terrific producer, especially for inspirational music or TY Bello’s Mosa ( Mosadoluwa Adegboye is the award-winning producer of TY Bello’s solo debut, Greenland). I don’t even live in Lagos and I know all these things,” said a fan. In the view of another fan, though the beat used for Omotola’s song was fantastic, he wished that the song was sold to someone else to do justice to it. “And to think this is the song being used by Amnesty International. So, this is the song that was inspired by activism? I can’t even talk anymore…This auto tune tie ti je ki ori mi daru die (Yoruba for ‘the auto tune is driving me crazy’). Let me go and eat and regain my sanity biko,” he said.

POLITIC: PDP Secures Court Order Against 5 Defected Governors

A Federal High yesterday directed the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to serve hearing notices on Governors Murtala Nyako (Adamawa), Chibuike Amaechi (Rivers), Aliyu Wamakko (Sokoto), Rabiu Kwankwaso (Kano) and Abdulfatai Ahmed (Kwara) by substituted means, in the suit challenging their defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Justice Gabriel Kolawole further ordered that the hearing notices should be pasted on the national secretariat of the APC in Abuja and should be published in two national dailies.

The order was granted by the court at the instance of the PDP, following the absence of the governors or their representatives in court yesterday.

Dr. Alex Izinyon (SAN), who appeared for the PDP with Damian Dodo (SAN), Omoruyi Omonuwa (SAN) and Dr. Fabian Ajogwu (SAN), had informed the court of the absence of the respondents in court, even after hearing notices had been served on them since December 16, 2013.

He, accordingly, applied that fresh hearing notices be issued and posted on the national secretariat of their party and the same be published in two national newspapers.

Justice Kolawole, who granted the application, adjourned the case to February 6 for hearing of the substantive suit.

In the suit, PDP wants the court to sack the five governors, who defected to the APC.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was listed as a defendant alongside the governors in the suit filed on behalf of the PDP by Izinyon.

PDP argued that the governors should be sacked from office on the grounds that, because of their defection, they had forfeited their offices, which, as a result, had reverted to the party.

In the event that the five governors are sacked from office, PDP wants the court to order the deputy governor or speaker of the state House of Assembly of each of the affected states, or any officer next in rank, who is still its member, to assume the office of governor.

PDP was also asking the court for several reliefs, among which was a declaration that by the combined provisions of sections 177 (c), 221 and 222 (c) of the 1999 Constitution, the five governors, who were elected on its platform, could not continue to enjoy the mandate given to it (PDP) by the people/electorate of the concerned states, as they (governors) had defected to another political party.

The court was also urged to make a declaration that in the absence of any division in the PDP, the five governors had vacated or forfeited their seats upon their defection to the APC.

Also, the court was asked to make a declaration that, by the combined provisions of sections 87 of the Electoral Act 2011 (as amended), and sections 177 (c), 221 and 222 (c) of the 1999 Constitution, the offices of the defected governors had reverted to the PDP.

In the same vein, the court was asked to make a declaration that, by the combined provisions of sections 177 (c), 221 and 222 (c) of the 1999 Constitution, upon the defection of the five governors, the mandate should be reverted to the deputy governors or speakers of the state Houses of Assembly of the respective states or any officer next in rank who is still a member of the PDP.

Amaechi, Chris Ngige Others Barred From Seeing El Rufai

The State Security Service on Monday detained a former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Malam Nasir el-Rufai at its headquarters in Abuja.

The SSS operatives detained el-Rufai, who is the interim Deputy Publicity Secretary of the opposition All Progressives Congress, when he reported at their office at about 9.20am in respect of the invitation he received for making “an inciting statement.”

Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, accompanied by Senator Chris Ngige, drove el-Rufai to the SSS office.

Amaechi said he was mandated by the leadership of the APC to accompany the ex-minister. Other party chieftains, including the APC national secretary, Mr. Tijani Tumsah, who also accompanied el-Rufai, were barred from entering the SSS premises.

One of the ex-minister’s wives and his lawyer were also part of the entourage that went with him to the Maitama office of the secret police.

Amaechi spent about one hour inside the SSS premises before he left. Ngige, who spent about four hours, left the SSS premises around 3pm. An attempt to speak with him by journalists was aborted by SSS operatives who asked everyone to leave the area.

The SSS had invited el-Rufai to its office last Friday over a statement in which he said there would be violence during the 2015 elections.

But the former minister declined to honour the invitation, saying he had instituted a suit against  the service for detaining him during the governorship election in Anambra State. He asked the agency to either meet him in his office or produce a Warrant of Arrest.

El-Rufai, in an interview with journalists moments before he entered the SSS office on Monday, explained that he did not honour the invitation earlier as there was no warrant, adding that the SSS had no power to compel him to come to its office because of the statement he made.

He said, “The SSS has provided the Warrant of Arrest and shown it to my lawyer on Friday and I said to my lawyer that we will come here this morning (Monday).

“It is all about politics, it is all about 2015, this is just an attempt to intimidate and silence opposition for crying out that elections are likely to be rigged; I will continue to speak and they will continue to arrest me until we get free and fair election in Nigeria.”

He said that he had the right under the country’s constitution to make the statement for which he was invited.

“There is nothing I have said that history has not shown. I said elections should be free and fair; if they are not free and fair, there is likelihood of violence. This has happened in our history in 1964, 1983, 1993 and 2011, so what is strange about that. Anybody that doesn’t know that is either not reading history or just ignoring history,’’ the APC chieftain insisted.

El-Rufai, while inside the SSS office tweeted, “Inside SSS headquarters. They are now saying Governor Amaechi and Senator Ngige will not be allowed into the building after walking 500 metres….impunity.”

The ex-minister remained with the security operatives as of the time of this report on Monday night.

Ogun APC Crisis: Speaker, Others Maybe Pushed Out Of Power

Speaker of Ogun State House of Assembly,
Suraj Adekunbi and other members loyal to governor
Ibikunle Amosun may likely  be consumed in the feud
between Amosun and national leader of the All Progressives
Congress in the state, Chief Segun Osoba.
A reliable source revealed that shortly after the
National Executive Council, NEC, ratified  the harmonisation
in the party, the leadership has started shopping for more
loyal members of the party to replace most of the
lawmakers who were given tickets in 2011 by Osoba.
There has been simmering crisis in the APC in the state as
Osoba and Amosun were at loggerheads over the control of
the party machinery.
Adekunbi and 17 others who were selected by Osoba and
other party leaders won  the election under the platform of
defunct Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, as members of the
state House of Assembly.
It was gathered that out  of the 17 defunct ACN members,
only two were originally from the Amosun group while 16
belonged to Osoba group, before some  of them were lured
over by the governor’s camp.
But in the lobby and scheming for who controls the
leadership and structure of the House of Assembly, it was
learnt that Amosun decimated the Osoba group and was
able to ‘buy’ over the six PDP and three PPN members.
Thus, the plan by the party to make   Suraju Adekumbi,
from Yewa North the Speaker scaled through, but, the party
failed in the choice of the deputy speaker slot as it’s
candidate Hon. Adijat Oladapo-Adeleye was dramatically
replaced by Amosun’s man .
A reliable source also revealed that,  the Osoba group has
vowed to replace all the members tagged disloyal including
the Speaker for pitching tent with Amosun during the crisis.
Sequel to the move to replace them , anxiety has gripped
some of the members as they may likely dump the governor
for Osoba to salvage their sinking ships.

Grammy Awards: Mackle More Agrees He Robbed Kendrick Lamar

Earlier tonight, Twitter was on fire after Macklemore swept the rap categories, picking up awards for Best New Artist, Best Rap Song (Thrift Shop), as well as Best Rap Album (The Heist). Meanwhile, he completely shut out the likes of Kendrick Lamar and even Jay Z (who eventually snagged an award for Best Rap/Sung collaboration for Holy Grail.)

Weeks before the awards ceremony, Grammy voters were in a debate over whether or not the Seattle rapper should even be considered in the rap categories because of his mainstream appeal, but after the decision was finalized to place him in the rap categories, everyone knew he would win because of his record sales and commercial success. [Most of these awards were much deserved, he had an incredible year.]

Tonight, after he won Best Rap Album over Kendrick Lamar, folks were in an uproar, and Macklemore responded by sharing a text he wrote to Kendrick.

The text said:

You got robbed. I wanted you to win. You should have. It’s weird and sucks that I robbed you. I was going to say that during the speech. Then the music started playing and I froze. Anyway, you know what it is. Congrats on this year and your music. Appreciate you as an artist and a friend. Much love.

He also included the caption:

My text to Kendrick after the show. He deserved best rap album… I’m honored and completely blown away to win anything much less 4 Grammys. But in that category, he should have won IMO. And that’s taking nothing away from The Heist. Just giving GKMC it’s proper respect.. With that being said, thank you to the fans. You’re the reason we were on that stage tonight. And to play Same Love on that platform was a career highlight. The greatest honor of all. That’s what this is about. Progress and art. Thank you. #grammys

"To those saying my husband is dead, I am telling them that they are talking out of ignorance .They are not spiritual and it is only spiritual people that will understand what is happening right away. It is a sin to say bad things against men of God and I am a living experience that he is not dead.
Whenever I call upon his God, he answers me. A lot of people have lots of testimonies. So I am telling them not to ever refer to him as a dead Prophet Elijah Ireti Ajanaku. I leave them to God if they do that. At the appropriate time, they will know the truth about the whole issue.
Even before this death rumour, I remembered he told the large congregation that he will cause commotion and the whole world will come to look for him. When it happened, we all knew my Daddy said so. This is the commotion he talked about but I know God will vindicate him."
She says when she calls upon his God, He answers? I don't get this. Is that why she said he's not dead?

Houses, Cars Vandalized After Hoodlums Reprisal Attack In Lagos

Some suspected hoodlums  invaded Olaiya Street, Mafoluku in the Oshodi Isolo area of Lagos State on Sunday morning.

They vandalising no fewer than 50 vehicles and some buildings, including that of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, Tree of Life parish.

The residents said the men, identified as Garage Boys, numbering over 100 and armed with bottles, cutlasses and other weapons, attacked the area and did the damage around 2am.

The residents said it was the fourth time the group would wreak such havoc without any challenge from policemen that usually come after the harm had been done.

It was  gathered that the Sunday morning attack was a reprisal for an earlier onslaught against the Garage Boys by the Alagbole Boys, another notorious group in the area.

While the cultists unleashed the mayhem, our correspondent learnt that residents were holed up in their houses for fear of being killed by the rampaging gang who dared residents to come out.

A secondary school student, Bose Abidogun, said she woke up around 2am and began taking note of the incident.

In her account obtained by our correspondent, she said, “It was like a nightmare, the worst I have seen. Around 2.38am, I woke up because I heard a bang outside. I first thought it was a robbery operation, but then I peeped through the window. I saw a group of boys armed with sticks, cutlasses, hitting the glass of every car on the street.

“I watched as Pastor Dare (a resident) looked at them destroying his car and could not do anything. The boys kept moving from car to car, breaking the cars’ glasses and winthrdscreens.”

Pastor Dare Majadeogbe said he watched helplessly as his private and church cars were damaged. He put his loss at N300, 000.

Majadeogbe said the gang had destroyed some cars and buildings on the adjoining street in 2013.

“Last year, they invaded Ayoni Street and destroyed many cars in a similar fashion. Now they have finished off Olaiya Street and vandalised all the cars they saw, ” he added.

Another resident, whose three cars were damaged, Timothy Adeniran, said he had lived in the area for 28 years and the problems started three years back.

Adeniran said he called the police during the incident, but they did not show up until two hours after the men were gone.

The Chairman of the Landlords and Tenants Association, Dauda Sulaiman, berated the attitude of the Makinde Police Division, which he described as non-challant.

He said, “I was out of Lagos when the incident happened. But immediately it started, the local vigilance group on the street called me around 12am. I asked them to alert the Makinde Police Station which is three streets away from us. I was reliably informed that they informed the police immediately, but the police came around 4am. While the boys were destroying the cars, some of the residents even went to the station at that odd hour, but the policemen there did not respond.”

Biodun Adeoto said it was the second time he was suffering heavy losses, alleging that the police had always made arrests in the past, only to later let suspects off the hook.

“They destroyed four windows of my car about four years ago. I was in Ilorin when I heard they had damaged another car. I couldn’t believe it. What have we done? I believe the police know the people disturbing the street, and if they want to show seriousness, they should go and get them,” he said.

The traditional ruler of Mafoluku, Husam Elemo said,“This has been happening for a long time, and I have always showed my dislike for things like this. Most times, the Special Anti Robbery Squad and Makinde Police Division would come in, and nothing would come out. The Alagbole boys and Garage Boys have been disturbing us. We do not want them to bury this recent devastation, like other cases. I want the government to wade into it this time so we can have lasting peace.”

20yrs Old Nigerian Undergraduate Arrested After Spending School Fees On Cannabis

A Nigerian undergraduate, who used his tuition fee to buy a hard drug, has been arrested for drug trafficking, National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, said in a statement, weekend.
NDLEA said the suspect, Udiomeh Kufre Ita, a student of the Faculty of Management Sciences at the Regent University in Ghana, was arrested at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.
He was caught with 1.745 kilogrammes of dried weeds that tested positive for cannabis, popularly called Indian hemp.
The suspect was found in possession of the drug during the inward screening of passengers on an Africa World Airlines flight from Accra, Ghana, according to NDLEA Lagos Airport Commander, Hamza Umar.
He said: “An undergraduate was found in possession of two parcels of cannabis weighing 1.745kg during routine search of passengers. The drug was hidden inside his bag containing personal effects. He was immediately arrested and the case is under investigation.
“The suspect, who reportedly gained admission into the Faculty of Management Sciences at the Regent University is currently assisting narcotic investigators assigned to the case,” NDLEA said in a statement signed by its spokesperson, Mitchell Ofoyeju.
In his confessional statement, Ita was quoted as saying that he used his tuition fees in purchasing the drug found on him.
He said: “I spent my school fees on cell phone, smoking hemp and attending night clubs. I bought a cell phone for N107,000 and spent my school fees recklessly. I thought I could make enough profit from the sale of cannabis to offset the deficit in my tuition. I bought each parcel of hemp for 220 Ghana cedis. I did not know what came over me and I am afraid to go to my parents. My father is a retiree.”
NDLEA said Ita hails from Akwa Ibom State but grew up in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja.
NDLEA Chairman, Ahmadu Giade, has described the action of the student as shameful and sad.
“This is very shameful and sad. It shows that the suspect is morally bankrupt. Students must understand that drug use is inimical to the pursuit of their academic goals,” Giade was quoted as saying.
The NDLEA boss called on members of the public to avoid drug use and support the fight against drugs.
“Abstinence from drug use is the best solution but those who have problem with drug use should please seek professional help before it is too late. Let us support the anti-drug campaign for a peaceful and fulfilled life,” Giade was quoted as saying.
NDLEA said the suspect will be placed on counselling and may likely be charged to court for unlawful importation of cannabis.

Abacha Did Not Loot Nigeria's Money, His Son Did - Jeremiah Useni

The Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Arewa Consultative Forum, Lt.Gen Jeremiah Useni (retd.), has said that former military dictator, General Sani Abacha was not responsible for the billions of dollars looted from the Federal Treasury during his regime. Useni who was a top member of Abacha’s government and who is described as Abacha’s closest confidant instead blamed the looting on Abacha’s son, Mohammed.

He told the PUNCH in a recent interview:

How did you feel working with a military dictator like Gen. Sani Abacha, who many believe was the most ruthless of all dictators?

He wasn’t a military dictator; that was the word coined by you, newspaper people. You will agree with me that today, many people would like to have Abacha back. He was a good administrator. When you talk of accountability, Abacha had it; when you talk about holding the nation to his heart, Abacha had it. How much was a dollar during his time? You would talk of N70 to N80; how much is it today? No discipline. When people say dictator, of course, every military man by nature is, you could say so. I know why Nigerians are saying so; they say he was a dictator because he was not democratically elected, that is all, but not that he acted as a dictator. It is Obasanjo who started painting Abacha like a bad guy. How many did Abacha kill? So, people are not looking at that.

You said Abacha was not corrupt, but billions of Naira stashed away in foreign bank accounts were traced to him after his death…

They never said this was the money found in Abacha’s account. It was his boys, his children, they never said they found money in Abacha’s account, they were talking of Mohammed (Abacha).

You mean Abacha didn’t have any hand in those stolen funds?

Not to my knowledge. You see, if my son steals, it doesn’t mean because I’m the father, I automatically have a hand in it. They are mentioning Mohammed Abacha and associates. Recently, I heard they are re-opening the case.

Are you saying Abacha was not corrupt?

It depends on the interpretation; every Nigerian is corrupt. If you are talking of corruption generally, every Nigerian is corrupt. But when somebody is found guilty of an offence, or of corruption, if he is charged to court and found guilty, then it will be on record; otherwise, it’s all accusation, allegations. What you people have been writing about; that I have $900m, £800m; I have so-and-so overseas; who has recovered a penny? People can also say I’m corrupt because of those publications. But, one has to be found guilty before you can say a person is corrupt.

Are you absolving yourself of the corruption in the Abacha government?

To the best of my knowledge, compared to what we saw later, Abacha did nothing. What they accuse Abacha of is nothing compared to what we saw later. Of course, I don’t speak for him, but I was a part of that government. I don’t have the same bank account with him, but as a part of that government, I know that the man was very careful with spending government money and that was why he set up the Petroleum Trust Fund and we all know the usefulness of that fund. You can still see the signboards of the boreholes, which were done by that fund in many remote villages. Since the name was changed, do you hear anything about it again? That is why he appointed somebody like (Gen. Muhammadu) Buhari (retd) to head the fund, somebody who is careful with government money. Buhari would have left the fund if Abacha had interfered with him. These are some of the things we don’t look at it. Because you hate somebody, you give the person a bad name just to hang him. But history will vindicate Abacha, people are already saying it. People were demonstrating in Lagos after Abacha’s regime and they sent the soldiers to stop it. So I said, ‘Look, even during Abacha, they never stopped demonstration, and this is a democratic period.’ I don’t understand why they should stop demonstrators. You know  Wole Soyinka was one of those condemning it, he was forced to speak because he was seeing reality.
