Asuu Strike Update: NEC Meeting Finally Postponed Till Jan 15 As More Versities Consider Pulling Out

More schools are set to dump the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, in the ongoing strike action embarked upon by the union for almost five months now.

This is as the National Executive Council, NEC, of the union meets today to decide on the sustained industrial action which many Nigerians have come to condemn.

The leadership of ASUU had postponed the scheduled NEC meeting at the Bayero University, Kano, following the demise of Festus Iyayi, a former president of the union, who died Tuesday last week in a motor accident along the Abuja-Lokoja highway.

The postponement of the NEC meeting to January 15, 2014, had caused widespread outcry as not a few Nigerians – students, parents and other stakeholders – condemned the decision of the union, saying it was evident of insensitivity to the plight of Nigerian students who are worst hit.

Following the development, several universities were said to have begun to hold talks on how to dump the national body and call off the ongoing strike in their respective institutions.

Regardless of the ongoing strike, some universities scheduled dates for their post-Universities Matriculation Examination, UME, exercises.

For instance, Lagos State University, LASU; the University of Lagos, UNILAG; and the University of Jos, UNIJOS, all scheduled to conduct the post UME examinations, although the national body frowned at their decision and stalled the examinations in most schools.

The Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko, AAUA, in Ondo State has already pulled out of the strike.

In a statement issued and signed by its registrar, R.B Olotu, the school had ordered its students to resume for the second semester on November 25, thereby boycotting the nationwide strike.

“All students of AAUA are hereby informed that academic activities of the second semester of 2012/2013 session truncated as a result of the ASUU national strike are to resume on Monday, November 25, 2013 with the continuation of registration on the university portal, while lectures are to start on Monday, December 2, 2013,” the statement read.

At the Niger State-owned Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai (IBBUL), some academic staff have already commenced teaching.

This has caused some rancour among ASUU as some lecturers and students have returned to the classrooms since Monday following the re-opening of the institution by the management. But the branch ASUU Chairman, Dr. Aliyu Badeggi, insisted that the strike was still in force in the institution.

Investigations by showed that lectures have resumed only in three departments – English and Linguistics, Mathematics and Physics, while Mass Communication, Business Administration and other Sciences were yet to resume lectures.

The Vice Chancellor, Professor Ibrahim Kolo, had last Friday directed students to resume lectures on Monday, after an emergency Senate meeting approved the re-opening of the institution.

Investigations reveal that several other institutions, especially those who voted for the suspension of the strike, are set to dump the union if it decides to continue with the ongoing strike after today’s meeting.

It was therefore no surprise when news filtered in that UNILAG and LASU were set to conduct degree and matriculation examinations outside their campuses.

Also, sources say the Enugu State University of Technology, ESUT, is set to call off the strike if at the end of today’s meeting ASUU still decides to go on with the strike.

The Adamawa State University was also reported to have pulled out of the strike.

Worried by this development, president of ASUU, Dr. Nasir Fagge has warned vice chancellors to desist from conducting off-campus examinations or other academic activities, as such moves could jeopardise the stand of the union.

“We appeal to our VCs to cease from further eroding the credibility of the academic profession which the iconic status of their offices represents. They should remember that they are destroying themselves and their professional calling by desecrating the sacred ethos of university degree and selection examination,” Fagge said.

It would be recalled that the 61 chapters of the association met on Monday last week to vote in their various institutions for or against the suspension of the strike.

Not a few Nigerians had expected that the personal intervention of the president would pacify the striking lecturers and persuade them to suspend the strike action; but instead, the industrial action had continued.

ASUU had however directed that all its 61 chapters hold their congresses on Monday, November 11.

While some chapters were ready to suspend the strike in the light of the president’s intervention, others insisted that they would continue the strike due to what they described as their distrust for the government.

Whereas the University of Lagos resolved to suspend the strike, chapters like the University of Ibadan, UI; University of Benin, UNIBEN; University of Calabar, UNICAL; University of Jos, UNIJOS, and the Lagos State University, LASU, vowed to continue as they insisted that the government cannot be trusted to fulfil its promise to inject over N1.1 trillion to universities in the next five

Revealed: How Onyii Alex Snatched Tonto Dikeh's Rich Lover

Alex onyii was said to have snatched tonto dikeh's rich lover, below is how showbiz plus reported it

You remember the Tonto Dikeh depression saga and how the actress talked about ending her own life?. Well, read the real reason behind the depression below according to Showbizplus:

Sexy actress and one of the hottest babes in Nollywood, Onyii Alex is heavy and expecting a love child with her multi-millionaire Igbo lover and married man, Promise, whom she allegedly snatched from Tonto Dikeh.
Aside the pregnancy stress, another challenge facing the slim-built thespian Onyii is the fact that she’s been living in hiding since her pregnancy came into the open.
A reliable insider told  disclosed that the bitter and angry wife of her lover, has allegedly threatened to deal ruthlessly with Onyii whenever or wherever their paths crossed.
And in order to avoid the impending wrath of the enraged and betrayed house wife, Onyii’s lover boy who always spoils her silly with gifts and the good things of life, has whisked her abroad for safety and safe delivery, pending when frayed nerves are calmed.
Surprisingly too, Nollywood bad girl and controversial actress, Tonto Dikeh, whom Onyii callously snatched Mr Promise from, is also threatening fire and brimstone.
According to one of Miss Dikeh’s close pals, she has vowed to pay Onyii back in her own coin at the appropriate time.
“Forget that story of Tonto wanting to commit suicide over the media intrusion into her privacy. The real cause was Onyii, who snatched her rich and doting sugar daddy Promise, thus leaving her high and dry. The separation with Promise, which was caused by Alex, whom Promise dumped Tonto for upon meeting her on a location around Festac, remains one of the saddest chapters in Tonto’s life. And I’m sure she has not gotten over it full time. She is still sulking,” disclosed this insider.
So many contacts made to  try reaching Dike and Onyii for reactions, but could not get across. Several calls to their phones responded they were switched off.

Soldier Killed In Lagos Robbery Operation

Operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, Lagos, smashed a robbery gang in the Ilasamaja area of Lagos State, killing two and arresting one other.

Report has it  that among those killed was a soldier, identified as Sgt Eyo B, with number 93NA/968.

According to Police authorities, the suspects were about to embark on a robbery operation around 7pm on Wednesday when the Officer-in-Charge of SARS, Abba Kyari, deployed his men in the area.

The suspects, on sighting the police, were said to have opened fire on the policemen after which the policemen fired back, killing two of the suspects while the third suspect, Chinonso Egbuzobi, was arrested.

Police Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Braide, said ammunition and a vehicle were recovered from the suspects.

She said, “Around 7pm on Wednesday, the Officer-in-Charge of SARS, SP Abba Kyari, received information that a group of armed robbers were about to strike a bureau de change in the Ilasamaja area of Lagos.

“Kyari deployed his men in the area and they engaged the robbers in a shootout and arrested one of the gang members, Chinonso Egbuzobi, 28.

“Two of the armed robbers, including one with Nigeria Army ID Card with No 93NA/968, depicting Sgt Eyo B, were fatally wounded.

“An AK47 rifle With S/no 05267, 11 Loaded AK47 Magazines, Chevrolet Jeep with plate number, LH 124 EKY were recovered. Investigation continues.”

All attempts to speak with the General Officer Commanding 81 Division, Major General Obi Umahi, for comment, proved abortive as his line stated that it was switched off.

Osun king Reportedly Strangled By OPC Before Inferno

Some chiefs and residents of Ilashe Ijesa in Obokun Local Government Area of Osun State on Thursday narrated how the monach of the town, Oba Adesina Anibijuwon, was killed by suspected members of Odua People’s Congress, who allegedly strangled him and left his corpse inside his residence which they set ablaze.

Those who recovered his corpse from the building said the charred remains of Anibijuwon were taken to the mortuary at Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Teaching Hospital in Osogbo by Osun Ambulance Service at around 10.30pm on Wednesday.

The ambulance that conveyed the remains of the monarch was said to have been escorted to the mortuary by armed policemen and some residents. The residents feared that those who killed him might want to seize his corpse.

Some residents who also spoke with our correspondent said the officials of the state fire service, who came to put out the inferno, ran out of water.

Some residents wondered why some chiefs in the town went into hiding when the hoodlums invaded the palace, urging the police to interrogate them to see if they were culpable.

The Commissioner for Information, Mr. Sunday Akere; his counterpart at the Ministry of Home, Culture and Tourism, Mr. Sikiru Ayedun; and the Special Adviser on Security, Mr. Amos Adekunle, who visited the  town expressed shock on seeing the extent of damage done to the residence of the traditional ruler.

Our correspondent, who also visited the town, observed that the upper floor of the two-storey building where the monarch resided was completely razed.

One of the chiefs, Adejumo Operinmade, told PUNCH Metro that he was informed that some persons, who claimed to be OPC members, came and demanded to see the monarch, but they were told that he was asleep.

He stated that the strange visitors came back and they pointed a gun to the head of the monarch’s housemaid. They allegedly went to late Anibijuwon’s room and strangled the octogenarian monarch who had been blind for over nine years.

Operinmade said, “We were told that some gunmen who claimed to be OPC members came and wanted to see Kabiyesi but they were told that he was sleeping.

“They came back and held the housemaid living with Kabiyesi hostage and went to where Kabiyesi was sleeping. But immediately they came out, fire started and Kabiyesi was burnt inside the house.  His corpse was taken to the mortuary at LAUTECH.”

The Sasore of Ilase, Chief Oluwagbemiga Oke, said there was no land dispute or chieftaincy tussle in the town, wondering why the suspected arsonists killed the monarch.

Chief Jumoke Ogunkeyede, whose brother gave  the burnt residence to the monarch, also said he heard that the hoodlums, who perpetrated the act, had an accident at the outskirts of the town while escaping from the scene.

He said, “We heard that they came in a red Mazda 323 and their car veered off into the bush while they were speeding away. We called journalists  from Osun State Broadcasting Corporation at Ibokun, but when they got there  to take photographs of the car, they saw that the it had been set ablaze.

“They also removed the number plate of the car. I believe that they set the car ablaze to hide their identities. But the police could still find a way of unraveling those behind the killing and arson.”

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mrs. Folasade Odoro, told our correspondent on the telephone that the command had commenced investigation into the matter.

She said, “We are pleading with members of the public to always furnish police with information any time they suspect strange persons and movement in their areas. This will assist the police to prevent crimes.”

President Jonathan Lands in London Hospital After Lavish Birthday Party

President in London hospital for checkup
• He is only indisposed, says spokesman
A DAY after President Goodluck Jonathan’s birthday was lavishly celebrated by the Federal Executive Council (FEC), the Presidency confirmed yesterday that he suddenly took ill and had to undergo a checkup in a hospital in the United Kingdom (UK).
Jonathan, who was not present at the celebration, left Nigeria on Wednesday morning for London as the head of the Federal Government’s delegation to a meeting of Honorary International Investors’ Council (HIIC) being co-ordinated by the one-time British Minister of Foreign Office, Baroness Lynda Chalker.
A statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, yesterday said that the President became indisposed and could not be present at the opening of the meeting today.
“President Jonathan has since been examined by competent medical practitioners. He has been advised to rest for a few days,” the statement said, but did not specify the nature of the illness, neither did he identify the hospital where the medical examination allegedly took place.
“The Presidency wishes to assure all Nigerians that President Jonathan’s condition is nothing serious and that the medical attention he has sought is only precautionary,” it said.
Reacting to the development yesterday, elder statesman, Dr. Tunji Braithwaite, who was outside the country, said: “I am very sorry to hear about the reported illness of President Goodluck Jonathan. He is a young man bristling with life and energy, therefore there should not be any cause for alarm.
“More so, it is our conviction that he is a man of destiny for the Nigerian nation state. He will fulfil his destiny. My family’s prayers and thoughts are with President Jonathan to recover quickly and back at his desk,” Braithwaite said.
President, Campaign for Democracy, Dr. Joe Okei-Odumakin who was shocked, said although she wished Jonathan a quick recovery, he should try as much as possible to be back home because he was needed more in Nigeria than a foreign land at this ‘crucial’ time.
Okei-Odumakin urged the President to limit his foreign trips because his absence in the country had been stalling the passage of the budget. “The country needs him at this particular time because there are a lot of issues that need his attention. Issues like insecurity, unemployment and university shutdown need to be addressed,” Odumakin said.
Former Minister of Information and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Tony Momoh, said Jonathan could be ill like every other normal person and that Nigerians should therefore stop making an issue out of it.
In the same vein, former Minister of Transportation, Chief Ebenezer Babatope, said the situation of the President was not as bad as the enemies of government were portraying it.
“I believe the President would return to Nigeria hale and hearty,” he said.
The National Publicity Secretary of Yoruba socio-cultural organisation, Afenifere, Yinka Odumakin, said Nigerians should continue to pray for the recovery of the President now that the nation was at a crossroad.
According to him, “nobody is super human. Anybody could succumb to a biological process at any point in time; it is therefore our responsibilities to continue to pray for his quick recovery.”
Lately, the President has been embarking on a number of foreign trips. He was in Israel in October for pilgrimage. Later on November 8, he embarked on a two-day diplomatic shuttle to Guinea-Bissau and Gambia. He returned Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta’s visit to Nigeria with a two-day visit on September 5 and 6 after his previous visit in April when the latter was being inaugurated.
Jonathan later travelled to New York on September 25. He was in South Africa in May, he was in China in July and he was in Accra and Cameroun in January 2013.
Experts have identified reasons political office holders in the country are more susceptible to poor health than their counterparts in other climes.
They rarely sleep, they work from 8.00 a.m. into the early hours of the next day; they spend most of their time at Aso Rock; they always have to deal with election tribunals and several litigations; and most times winning an election is a-do-or-die affair.
Medical experts, including the Medical Director of Medical ART Centre (MART), Maryland, Ikeja, and adjunct professor at the University of Illinois in Chicago, United States (U.S.), Prof. Oladapo Ashiru, who spoke with The Guardian, summed it up:   “They all lead a very stressful life. They work at very high speed.”
Also, recent studies published in credible medical journals such as the British Medical Journal (BMJ), Nature, and The Lancet, have linked stress and sleep deprivation to headaches, high blood pressure, heart problems, diabetes, skin conditions, asthma, arthritis, depression, and anxiety.
Ashiru said in a telephone interview yesterday: “The consequences of not having enough rest as is evident in most of our political office holders are very grievous. You see in this country unlike in other climes our President and political office holders are working on high speed and there should be no need for it. Most of them work from morning to very early hours of the next day. If you look at someone like George Bush, the former President of U.S., by afternoon time, they get to their houses and attend only to emergencies. I remember once when there was emergency and George Bush was woken up.
“But most of our political office holders are always awake. It has been known that stress creeps in when you don’t rest. The body needs at least six hours of sleep daily to function well. I discovered that many of our political leaders don’t have time to go for checkups.
“When they are at that level of stress, their immunity will decrease as well as the function of the adrenalin gland. So, most of the time, they don’t have time to rest; they only stay at Aso Rock. There is too much stress and that has a heavy toll on the body organs.
“Once there is stress, the immunity is lowered and the adrenalin gland function is reduced. When that happens, it goes to the heart and kidney and once the two organs are compromised, the person will break down with chronic diseases like heart diseases, hypertension, diabetes, and kidney failure.  The brain is also not left out because it can lead to mental health problems.”
Ashiru described stress as the body’s reaction to any change that requires an adjustment or response. “The body reacts to these changes with physical, mental, and emotional responses.
Stress is a normal part of life. Many events that happen to you and around you - and many things that you do yourself - put stress on your body. You can experience stress from your environment, your body, and your thoughts.
“The human body is designed to experience stress and react to it. Stress can be positive, keeping us alert and ready to avoid danger. Stress becomes negative when a person faces continuous challenges without relief or relaxation between challenges. As a result, the person becomes overworked and stress-related tension builds.
“Stress that continues without relief can lead to a condition called distress - a negative stress reaction. Distress can lead to physical symptoms, including headaches, upset stomach, elevated blood pressure, chest pain, and problems sleeping”, he said.
Research suggests that stress also can bring on or worsen certain symptoms or diseases.
Stress also becomes harmful when people use alcohol, tobacco, or drugs to try and relieve their stress. Unfortunately, instead of relieving the stress and returning the body to a relaxed state, these substances tend to keep the body in a stressed state and cause more problems.
Recent studies published in WebMD considered the following:
. Forty-three per cent of all adults suffer adverse health effects from stress.
. Seventy-five per cent to 90 per cent of all doctor’s office visits are for stress-related ailments and complaints.
. Stress can play a part in problems such as headaches, high blood pressure, heart problems, diabetes, skin conditions, asthma, arthritis, depression, and anxiety.
. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) declared stress a hazard of the workplace. Stress costs American industry more than $300 billion yearly.
. The life-time prevalence of an emotional disorder is more than 50 per cent, often due to chronic, untreated stress reactions.

Asuu Strike Latest: Prof Iyayi Was Assassinated By Government - JAF

The Joint Action Front (JAF) has accused the government of master-minding the killing of former president of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Prof Festus Iyayi who died recently in a motor accident involving the convoy of Kogi State governor.

JAF in a statement signed by its president, Comrade Abiodun Aremu said the death of the veteran unionist was questionable.

They said “JAF wishes to alert Nigerians and the international community that Comrade Festus Iyayi was murdered by operatives of the Nigerian state, contrary to the widely reported claims that he died in the bus accident of November 12, 2013 along Lokoja – Abuja road due to the recklessness of the Kogi State governor’s convoy.

“JAF has every reason to believe that the murder of Comrade Iyayi was connected with the on-going Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) strike to compel the federal government to, not only honour the Collective Agreements it reached with it in 2009, but also to make government responsible to adequately fund public education against the dictates of its puppeteers – the IMF and World Bank.

“ We strongly believe that the assassination of Comrade Iyayi was carried out by expert shooters in the cover of the Nigerian Intelligence, reminiscence of the state murder of Dele Giwa in 1986 and Kudirat Abiola in 1996”, the statement said.

JAF said official explanation by the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) and the Sole Administrator of the Specialist Hospital, Lokoja, Dr Paul Amodu that Comrade Iyayi’s death was as a result of the accident, did not explain the piercing of his heart by a strange object.

JAF added that Iyayi’s death is a wakeup call to all Nigerians to struggle for a better society where people’s lives are respected and preserved.

AAUA Resumption, Lecturers Dare's Management

Following the statement issued on Wednesday by the management of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko [AAUA], in Ondo State, ordering students and lecturers to resume on November 25, the Academic Staff Union of Universities [ASUU] of the institution, today dissociated itself from the purported resumption.

It would be recalled that the Authorities of the institution, through its Registrar, R.B Olotu said the AAUA has pulled out of the ongoing ASUU strike, adding that students are expected to resume for the second term next Monday.

But in a statement issued by the state chairman of AAUA’s ASUU, Dr. Busuyi Mekusi, he insisted that his members were still part of the ongoing national strike.

He urged ASUU members to disregard the circular calling for resumption, stressing that the University Chapter of ASUU was in support of the action of its national body.

The statement reads, “We, the executives of ASUU, AAUA chapter, wish to dissociate ourselves from the purported resumption of academic activities in the university, as its members are still part of the ongoing national strike by the Union.

“Members should therefore, disregard any pullout to abandon the struggle, and be steadfast until the present position is reviewed by NEC. The Union also wants to make it abundantly clear that it would resist every tyrannical propensity to intimidate and harass its members”.

Asuu Strike : Still So Much Uncertainty On Next NEC Meeting

As students of the nation's public universities continue to hold their breathe over whether the striking Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) would accept the latest offer of the federal government and end their four-month strike, uncertainty continues to prevail as regards to when the crucial meeting of the National Executive Council (NEC) would hold. THISDAY gathered that the death of the former ASUU President, Prof. Festus Iyayi, is the likeliest reason for the continued delay in holding the meeting. The much-anticipated NEC meeting would be the decider over the fate of students, who have been idling at home for almost five months. There were speculations that the meeting would hold last Saturday, after it was cancelled due to the auto crash which claimed the life of the unionist and author. ASUU’s representatives said there had been no intention to hold the meeting on Saturday.
But some newspapers had reported that the meeting may hold next Friday, even though this was neither confirmed nor debunked by the union. There were also speculations currently that the union may decide to postpone the crucial meeting till next year.
A labour analyst, however, told THISDAY that the meeting was likely to hold after the burial of Iyayi, which had been tentatively slated for the first week of December. "They may have decided to postpone the meeting as a mark of honour to their departed colleague, who died while on his way to the meeting. We should also give them that chance to mourn him," he said.
ASUU President, Dr. Nasir Fagge, did not respond to calls made to his mobile phone.

Asuu Strike Update: FG Negotiations With Asuu Is Null And Void Witout Wages Commission - Senate

1Chairman, Senate Committee on Establishment and Public Service Matters, Aloysius  Etok,  said on Monday that the ongoing negotiations between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities, “would be null and void without the input of the National Wages and Salaries Commission.”

Etok said this in Abuja during his committee’s oversight tour  on the activities of the agency.

“Under no guise should the Federal Government negotiate salary or wage increase without the input of the relevant commission,” he said.

The senator also advised the government against “sentimental negotiation for salary increase in the civil service.”

He noted  that such  negotiation was the cause of the incessant industrial actions in the country.

He said, “We have said this earlier that on no account should the Federal Government in particular go on negotiation for salary increase or anything that has to do with wages or salary without the input of the commission.

“They should avoid the issue of sentimental increase or negotiation. We should cancel exceptions. Four months is about a semester.

“The commission was expected to have played a prominent role in the 2009 agreement reached between the Federal Government and ASUU.”

Etok   chided the commission over the implementation of the 2013 budget as well as on why  the impact of the commission was not felt on Public workers’ salary crises that tended to cripple some sectors of the economy from time to time.

He said, “The commission might look small but  its importance cannot be under-estimated. We have come to know your level of implementation of the 2013 budget.

“We also want to know the relevance of the commission to the Federal Government and why your impact is not felt in the salary problems across the country.

“We should ensure that the commission would  be there when ASUU is on strike for months as well as who guided the Federal Government  in the agreement entered with ASUU in 2009. You cannot be ruled out in the scheme of things in this country.”

Etok also lamented the withholding of part of the 2013 budget of the commission and maintained that the commission required funds to carry out its research-based projects.

He said, “We frown on this situation and we want to call  on the Minister of Finance to do something so that you can lay a proper foundation for the commission.”

The Chairman, National Income, Salaries and Wages Commission, Dr. Richard Egbule,  exonerated the commission from the agreement reached between the Federal Government and ASUU.

He said, “The wages  commission has been up and doing in everything concerning wages and salary in this country.

“When the controversial agreement was reached in 2009, we were there but not as negotiators. We made it known to them that the route they were going was wrong.

“Today, I wish to say that ASUU did not go on strike because of salary due to the fact that we handled it very well.”

“What is controversial was the Excess Workload Allowance but we have asked them to employ more lecturers to avoid excess workload.”

But the weird thing is that they went to Ghana with a private jet, so why get stuck? and rumour has it that Jude might not be in support of Peter’s marriage after all probably because of ethnic difference between Lola and his brother.

Read excerpt from Linda’s blog below;

I just spoke with P-Square’s publicity, Bayo Adetu, and he confirmed that Jude Okoye was not at Peter and Lola’s wedding yesterday. I asked why he didn’t attend and Mr Adetu said Jude and some members of P-Square’s band were stuck in Ghana after their Saturday night show. He said Peter and Paul were able to make the trip back on Sunday morning but not Jude. That’s the official reason but erm, I don’t know if I believe it. 1, they traveled by private jet so…how can you get stuck? 2, people have been writing to me that the music exec was spotted at different locations in Lagos yesterday, and 3, Jude posted a pic of himself and Wizkid at Don Jazzy’s Mavin studio on instagram yesterday and never made mention of the wedding. Really weird! Hopefully there’s good reason for his missing his own brother’s wedding.

And like I said yesterday, Paul was at the wedding! He just didn’t participate in many pic taking.

What do you make of this guys? do you think Jude was really stuck?
