Bride Involved In Crash With Truck On Wedding Day

A bride has  narrowly escaped death in an auto crash while on her way home from her wedding. The accident involving a NNPC  tanker with number plate XG 321 MKA, a cargo truck and two saloon cars happened at about 4: 45pm on Saturday, close to the Otedola bridge, Alausa, on Lagos/Ibadan Expressway.

People who witnessed the accident said the NNPC truck, while descending the slop from Alausa at top speed, could not hold its break. It then ran into the first car and squashed the second one against the cargo truck.

The bride and her husband were said to have jumped out of their car.

When our reporter got to the scene of the accident, the groom was no where in sight. The groom’s elder sister who spoke to our repoter while cuddling her baby explained that they were just coming from the wedding reception of the couple.

She was seen kneeling down and thanking God for their escape but refused to give the name of the couple.

The fire coming out of the truck was put out by sympathisers as the tanker was carrying petroleum product. The accident also resulted in  gridlock which was controlled by men of the Federal Road Safety Corps.

Asuu Strike Update: Uniben Esut And OOU Teaching Staffs Vows Not To Resume

The Chairman, ASUU, University of Benin, Dr. Tony Monye-Emina said, “The strike has not been called off. The authority (of the institution) is following government’s directive; we are not shifting our stand. It is not a local strike.

“It is not true we are calling off the strike. How can we be holding a meeting tonight? The burial is going on and it continues tomorrow (today).”

Also, ASUU in Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ogun State, vowed not to obey government’s order that lecturers should return to classroom on Monday.

The Chairman, ASUU, OOU chapter, Dr. Nasir Adesola said the lecturers would not succumb to threats by government to sack them.

Adesola, who is also the South-West Coordinator, ASUU, stressed that since the lecturers did not go on strike in the first instance because of government, they would not return to work by coercion from government.

He stated that the lecturers would only go back to the classroom when the government had met their demands.

“We didn’t go on strike because of government order. The reasons for which we embarked on the strike have not been discharged by the government. Those orders of government are just part of executive recklessness. We are not returning to work on Monday,” Adesola said.

Similarly, the ASUU Chairman in Enugu State University of Technology, Prof. Gab Agu, said lecturers would not resume on Monday. He said it was a rumour that the union would call of the strike.

He stated that the National Executive Council of ASUU would meet and agree before the strike could be called off.

Same with ASUU in the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, where the Chairman, Dr. Ifeanyi Abada, said only the ASUU NEC could announce the suspension of the strike.

Asuu Strike Update:Monday Ultimatum, Asuu Dares FG Again, Says Strike Continues

It was uncertain on Saturday whether the Academic Staff Union of Nigeria Universities would call off its five-month-old strike, despite the Federal Government’s Monday ultimatum.

There were speculations that the university lecturers would suspend the strike after the burial ceremony for an ex-ASUU President, Prof. Festus Iyayi, who was killed in an accident involving the Kogi State governor’s convoy.

However, sources in the union who spoke to our correspondents on Saturday insisted that the strike continues.

Same with ASUU in the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, where the Chairman, Dr. Ifeanyi Abada, said only the ASUU NEC could announce the suspension of the strike.

The Governing Council of the University of Ibadan had on Friday, based on the directives of the Committee of Pro-Chancellors of Federal Universities and the National Universities Commission, said the institution would be re-opened on January 4, 2014.

In the official bulletin of the university, which was signed by its Registrar and Secretary to the Council, Mr. Olujimi Olukoya, the council explained that the re-opening became necessary in view of the consideration of all matters relating to the on-going ASUU strike, at its recent meeting.

Toni payne Takes A Shot At Linda Ikeji, Defends Toke Makinwa

Toni Payne has decided to come to time makinwa rescue by defending her action and shuting her critics....below is her expression on her blog

Let me start by saying, we sometimes avoid those touchy
subjects because we wish to avoid “drama” but Cyber Bullying is
one concept it seems we are yet to get a full grasp on its
consequences.
We have seen cases of young ones committing suicide because
they couldn’t handle the bullying. I pray and hope things don’t
get this far in my motherland, although I suspect it may have
and we just don’t document it as much.
There is this ”trend” of making vicious comments about others
that has become popularized by certain blogs.
I have seen it happen to celebrities and non celebrities alike,
some notable names being Tonto Dikeh, Dbanj, and most
especially Karen Igho, just to name a few. Its like the general
mentality has become, if you ever become the topic on certain
blogs, get ready to either grow thick skin or have a mini heart
attack.
Anyways lets fast forward to why we are here. Today, I saw
tweets to the effect that Toke Makinwa was being attacked on a
certain blog. One of the retweets took me to the source and my
heart was like, something has to be said. If it changes
something, fine. If it doesn’t, that’s fine too.
Toke may not say anything because she wishes to appear strong
and non chalant, but damn, she isn’t made of steel and has
blood in her veins and emotions like we all do. Last time I
checked, most people that have been a victim of cyber bullying
such as this are human too. Also, there is no age restriction on
these blogs so your kids are reading and learning. To those who
make these comments its “fun”, but when does fun turn into
torment and emotional abuse?
Toke and I are not close friends so I have nothing to gain from
defending her except calling a spade a spade.
If someone is having personal issues, offer words of support and
move on, if she likes going to parties, free her because she is
using her legs and not yours. If she wants to vlog about her life,
take what you can from it and keep it moving. Try and distinct
constructive comments from vicious ones. Try to distinct funny
from wicked.
From the little I know about her, Toke Makinwa is a sweet lady.
She is friendly, funny and down to earth so it leaves me
wondering, what all these people raining hurtful abuses about
her stand to gain. Even if she is not all these things, if they
don’t know her personally, what do they stand to gain? You
want to know the answer? Absolutely NOTHING!. They comment,
laugh, and move on. To them its entertainment but to the person
who is being picked on, its not close to funny. When it becomes
a family member, its not close to funny. If it is your child
someday, it will not be close to funny.
With that said, I hope people search their conscience before they
comment. If not, no problem. We can’t see you as anonymous
but God knows how its going down.
I have had some deep discussions about this with a few big
name celebrities and hopefully, as the years progress, something
can be done to see a big reduction in cyber bullying. Lets aspire
to love more and hate less.

OJB Jazreel Returns From india, Taken to undisclosed Location

Veteran  producer, OJB Jezreel has landed in Nigeria months after undergoing a successful kidney transplant in India. Jezreel, who was earlier expected to return on Saturday, 7th December 2013, according to what I just learnt, actually breezed in on Thursday, 5th December 2013.
His return at an earlier date was arranged to make it a surprise for everyone.

Sources say Jezreel is being lodged now in a hotel at an undisclosed, secret location, not far from his Surulere, Lagos residence. This also was to allow him have enough rest as he recuperates, to avoid him being disturbed by fans who anxiously looked forward to receive him.

The music producer returned with his wife, Mabel Okungbowa, who donated one of her kidneys to save him.

Comedian Basketmouth Dreams To Co Host OSCARS

Bright Okpocha a.k.a Basketmouth  took the floor  not as a comedian, but this time around, as a motivational speaker at the youth enterprise conference which held at Eko Hotel and Suites last Tuesday.
Clad in a fitted black suit with a black tie to complement his looks, Basketmouth took the audience back in time, reliving memories of how he was able to  weather the storm and become  what he is today, in the entertainment industry.
“I never knew what comedy was, but I only knew I was a fun guy. In those days, when I was in UNIBEN , I used to stand in a bus from Benin to Ojota  for more than  three hours just to make ends meet,” he reminisced.
The rapper- turned-comedian also spoke about the power of dreaming .According to him, “There is no harm in dreaming. I dreamt of hosting Comedy Central and it came to pass. Now, my dream is to host the OSCARS . Hard work is greater than talent. I have met a lot   of people who are talented but who don’t work hard on their talent. You need to learn to start small, even Ruggedman was once Paul play’s manager’ he said.

Annie idibia Shares Memories Of How She Got A Blue Diamond Ring From 2face

How British Jerry Dammer's Pop Song Helped Free Mandela

Free Nelson Mandela, 21 years in captivity, Shoes too small to fit his feet, His body abused but his mind is still free, Are you so blind that you cannot see? I said: Free Nelson Mandela, I’m begging you, Free Nelson Mandelal”

The anti-apartheid message was serious and heartfelt but the song that alerted many around the world to the injustices of the South African regime could not have been more upbeat.

“Free Nelson Mandela” was a Top 10 hit in the United Kingdom for The Special AKA in 1984, and it instantly became the unofficial anthem and slogan for the international anti-apartheid movement.

The song’s eponymous subject rose to prominence in the 1950s as a radical young member of the African National Congress, the main opposition movement to the segregationist South African government.

As an advocate of guerrilla attacks, Mandela, was frequently arrested and eventually convicted in 1964, along with other ANC leaders, for sabotage. He received a life prison sentence, and spent 27 years in a cell, mostly on Robben Island, off the South African coast.

While Mandela languished in jail, an anti-apartheid movement slowly developed in the West, starting with sporting sanctions against South Africa and later an artists’ boycott of performances in the country.

The composer of “Free Nelson Mandela,” Jerry Dammers – the founder of the multiracial English aka-punk band, The Specials, later renamed The Special AKA – admits he knew little about Mandela before he attended an anti-apartheid concert in London in 1983, which gave him the idea for the song.

“I’d never actually heard of Nelson Mandela although I knew a lot about the anti-apartheid movement and he was becoming a figurehead for the whole movement,” Dammers told CNN.

The keyboardist, who also wrote “Ghost Town,” the seminal Specials song against the policies of Great Britain’s prime minister at the time, Margaret Thatcher, may not have known much about the imprisoned anti-apartheid figurehead, but his lyrics brought Mandela’s struggle to the attention of a wider audience.

Blasphemy: My Investigations Shows That David Oyedepo And Adeboye Are Certified Cultist - Kemi Olunloyo

Of course, I'm not writing this, its from no other person but the self acclaimed man hater, KEMI olunloyo...
This is what she wrote on her blog:

“You will be surprised to know that some of these Nigerian Pastors commit the most heinous acts. I'm sure you have read in newspapers that a pastor raped a boy, girl or woman, a pastor supplied guns to armed robbers, a pastor stole money.
Nothing like my new investigation about Pastor Enoch Adeboye and Pastor David Oyedepo; aside from being certified cult members like Jim Jones, they are also GAY!
They preach all this anti-g*y shit to Christians when they were the pastors at Sodom and Gonorrhea. Yup, the land of STD in the BIBLE! Have you ever thought about what happens in those private jets while they are on their way to meetings in heaven?
Those two Christian leaders BANG each other onboard. Yes, Adeboye and Oyedepo are G*Y and have a secret relationship. Add Pastor Tuberculosis and you will have a full blown threesome disease in Sodom and Gomorrah.
Remember when I was in Atlanta, I actually visited Bishop Eddie Long's church and he was G*Y, all the time fu*king boys! Christians are FAKE in Nigeria!”

Could she be alright?

Nelson Mandela's Burial Arrangement Announced

President Jacob Zuma announced that the anti-apartheid hero would be buried in a state funeral on Sunday, December 15, 2013, in his ancestral hometown of Qunu in the Eastern Cape province, alongside three of his children who had been deceased.

Zuma also stated that an official memorial service would be held for Mandela on December 10, 2013, at the First National Bank Stadium in Johannesburg.

Earlier, Zuma had announced ten days of national mourning following  Mandela’s death, which had drawn tributes from across the world. World leaders, politicians, celebrities and others have expressed condolences on the death of the statesman. His death was also said to have brought traffic to the social media.

In his speech on Friday,  Zuma said the day Mandela would be laid to rest would be a “national day of prayer and reflection”, in which the country’s citizens would gather in religious houses to pray and meditate on the life of the African icon.

The burial arrangement also stated that Mandela’s body would lie in state at the seat of government in Pretoria from Wednesday, December 11-13, 2013.

But in spite of the profound sense of sadness that had befallen the nation, mourners at Mandela’s home danced and sang freedom songs in honour of the late anti-apartheid crusader.

Some mourners placed flowers near the home, while others carried photo posters of the late freedom fighter.

In Soweto township, where Mandela lived before he was imprisoned for 27 years, posters of his face adorned streets. Residents surrounded his former red brick house, chanting songs of freedom and the National Anthem.

Two men made a shrine of flowers and candles. “He came here to Soweto as a lawyer and he led us. When he came out of jail in 1994, after 27 years, he did not come out a bitter man and encourage us to fight. No, he came out with a message of peace,” said one of them, Mbulelo Radebe, 37.

At Nelson Mandela Square in Sandton neighbourhood of Johannesburg, people gathered at the foot of the famous 6m bronze statue of Mandela, paying homage to the leader.

A white mourner, Sonja Pocock, who was in tears, said, “For 23 years, I walked a path with this man since he was released. I’m from the old regime. He’s like my grandfather. He is my grandfather.”

Another mourner, Krezaan Schoeman, said, “I admired him. He stood for something, for freedom and equality. Even if some say he was a terrorist, he stood for his beliefs. Everybody’s got a right to life. It doesn’t matter if you’re rich or poor, black or white. That’s what he stood for. And for forgiveness.”

Also, near Mandela’s home in the Johannesburg suburb of Houghton, children spelled out with rocks “We love you Mandela.”

Some mourners wept as they lit candles, but still, others danced and sang in celebration of a life that has been widely described as “well lived.”

Indeed, the celebration of Mandela’s life was on an international dimension as memorials popped up from Los Angeles to Chicago, where mourners placed flowers and candles in front of murals bearing his likeness. In Washington, crowds gathered in front of the South African Embassy.

Thousands of miles away by the steps of South Africa House on Trafalgar Square, London, were flowers, which had been placed by mourners.

In his Thursday address, Zuma said, “Our nation has lost its greatest son, our people have lost a father.”   He said, “Although we knew that this day would come, nothing can diminish our sense of a profound and enduring loss.”

Meanwhile, Mandela’s eldest grandson, Mandla, said his family has been overwhelmed by the global outpouring of support since the passing on of the 95-year-old former president.

Mandla, whose full name is Nkosi Zwelivelile Mandela, said he was “deeply saddened,” by Mandela’s loss. He, however, added that he was “strengthened by the knowledge that he is now finally resting.”

“All that I can do is thank God that I had a grandfather who loved and guided all of us in the family. The best lesson that he taught all of us was the need for us to be prepared to be of service to our people,” Mandla said in a statement, the first public comment from Mandela’s family since his death.

Mandla said his grandfather displayed a fighting spirit during his protracted battle with lung infection in the months preceding death.

He said, “He is an embodiment of strength, struggle and survival, principles that are cherished by humanity. As a grandfather, we have all known him as a kind hearted, generous and wise person who was always prepared to offer us advice on how to be good members of our communities.

“Celebrating his long life is the best accolade we can give him. Celebrating his contribution to society will make him smile in his resting place. We look forward to continue our interaction with him as one of our beloved ancestors.”

A retired archbishop, Desmond Tutu, said, “He transcended race and class in his personal actions, through his warmth and through his willingness to listen and to empathise with others.’’

R.I.P: Former South African President, Thabo Mbeki Statement On Passing Away Of Mandela

STATEMENT OF FORMER PRESIDENT THABO MBEKI ON THE PASSING AWAY OF PRESIDENT NELSON ROLIHLAHLA MANDELA. December 5, 2013. Earlier tonight, my wife Zanele and I learnt with immense distress and profound sadness of the passing away of one of the greatest sons of our people, Esteemed Member of the Order of Mapungubwe and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Isithwalandwe President Nelson Mandela. His departure represents a very sad moment of grief for his family. But it also constitutes a personal loss for us because over many decades, he served both as our guide and one of our fathers. President Mandela, Madiba, and his generation of freedom fighters walked their long walk and made enormous sacrifices which eventually led to our freedom in 1994. His passing signals the end of an historic era represented by the heroic deeds of his generation. Thus, President Mandela’s departure demands of those of us who remain, South Africans and all Africans on the rest of our Continent, that we commit ourselves selflessly to address the many challenges we face. President Mandela and his generation discovered the mission of their generation. They were at all times faithful to it, as a result of which they fulfilled it. As we mourn President Mandela’s passing we must ask ourselves the fundamental question - what shall we do to respond to the tasks of building a democratic, non-racial, non-sexist and prosperous South Africa, a people centred society free of hunger, poverty, disease and inequality, as well as Africa’s renaissance, to whose attainment President Nelson Mandela dedicated his whole life? We convey our heartfelt condolences to his dear wife, Graça Machel, and the rest of his entire family. Issued by the Office of former President Thabo Mbeki. Johannesburg

Asuu Strike Latest: FG Should Reconsider Ultimatum - ACF

HE Pan Northern socio-political group, Arewa Consultative Forum, has advised the Federal Government to reconsider the ultimatum issued to the Academic Staff Union of Universities to call of its five-month-old strike.

The government had given a seven-day ultimatum, which expired on Wednesday, but extended it to December 9 due to the ongoing burial activities in honour of a former ASUU President, Prof. Festus Iyayi, who was killed in an accident.

The ACF, in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Anthony Sani, on Thursday urged ASUU to hasten negotiation on the final part of its agreement with the government for a quick resumption “in the interest of the students, parents and the educational system.”

The statement read in part, “Nigerians have been told by both the Federal Government and ASUU that necessary agreements and planned actions have been completed preparatory for resumption of lectures by ASUU; and that all that remain is mere paper work needed for the agreements and planned actions to find expression.

“ACF wishes to call on ASUU to please hasten the completion of the said paper work with a view to calling off the strike forthwith in the interest of the students, parents and the educational system.

“ACF also appeals to the authority to reconsider its ultimatum to ASUU to resume lectures or be sacked.

“This is because no purpose will be served by the ultimatum at this stage when ASUU has said all that remain for calling off the strike is mere paper work.

“The ultimatum, at this stage, can only result in avoidable test of wills capable of prolonging the strike, which no one wants.”

Asuu Strike Update: We Will Have No Option Than To Call Off Strike If - Asuu

President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Dr. Nasir Issa Fagge, yesterday, gave conditions for the suspension of the six month old strike. Fagge who spoke on Channels Television, yesterday morning, said once government opens the bank account with N200 billion, requested by the union, the strike would be suspended.

“Once that is done, and the committee that is supposed to disburse the funds starts working, our members will have no reason not to suspend the strike action.

He asked: “Why won’t government make available this money so that we know the money is there and the universities commence drawing from this money to address the problem of decay in infrastructure, teaching and research facilities? When that is done, our members will suspend the strike.”

The ASUU president also dismissed insinuations in some quarters that the union had been split.

On suggestions in some government quarters that ASUU was being influenced by opposition parties, Dr. Fagge said “ASUU is a union of cerebral intellectuals”. He said the union is not influenced by religion, or ethnicity, saying however that members of the union are free to associate with any political party of their choice.

Meanwhile, the University of Calabar has announced that the university resumes today for academic activities and directed all students who did not finish their registration to do so immediately.

But Chairman of Academic Staff Union of Universities, Unical chapter, Dr. James Ekprinya has warned parents that the university is still on strike and that any one that releases his ward is doing that at his own peril.

In a press release by the Deputy Registrar, Academic division, Mr. Mike Monity, the university yesterday stated that, “Normal Academic/Allied activities will resume tomorrow, the December 4, 2013 at the University of Calabar.

Monity in a release said the resumption was the decision reached at an emergency meeting of senate held at the senate chambers of the Institution.

It further stated that “the decision is in compliance with the directive issued by the Minister of Education” and that details of the revised university calendar would be disclosed in due course.

It also advised students with pending activities like second semester registration, Final year and Post Graduate research projects to start immediately as the school works out time table for lectures.

The ASUU chairman, Dr. Ekpirinya said that the congress rose from its congress with “a strong resolve to continue the strike until the agreements are implemented to the letter.

“We did not close school, we will not re-open it. We warn parents that any one who decides to send his or her ward to school is doing so at his or her peril.”

In a similar move, University of Benin chapter of ASUU, yesterday, vowed to continue the current strike action and admonished President Goodluck Jonathan to embrace dialogue with the union rather than threats.

Meanwhile, no sign of resumption of academic activities at the university yesterday, despite the announcement by the university authorities Monday, calling on students and academic staff to resume duties.

Addressing journalists yesterday, chairman of the UNIBEN Chapter of the ASUU, Dr Anthony Monye-Emina who was recently involved in the accident that led to the death of Professor Iyayi, advised parents to inform their children to stay at home, insisting that the strike action will not be called off until the Federal Government implements the agreements.

According to him: “We want to advise parents not to send their children back to campus in the event of any announcement of resumption of classes by the university administration in line with the supervisory Minister’s directive. The union has not called off the strike. The President should continue on the path of honour to dialogue with the union as this is the only way to find an immediate and lasting solution to the crisis in the university system.”

The University of Agriculture Abeokuta chapter of ASUU has vowed not to be cowed by the sack threat by the Federal Government, warning its members against signing the register by the University.

Addressing newsmen, yesterday, at the COPLANT auditorium of the University, the chairperson for ASUU -UNAAB, Dr. Biodun Badmus said the Union would not resume as directed by the Federal Government.

Badmus who was flanked by some past leaders of the union in the university advised the Federal Government to implement the agreement made with the Union for the sake of the students in the country.

Speaking on the plans by the union against any member that signs the register, Dr. Badmus said that the union would not hesitate to discipline any member of the Union who signs back to work register.

He said “ Of course, even in the days of Jesus Christ there are Judases, it is envisaged and the union has its practices and code of conduct and there are laid down procedures to thrash out such areas should anybody sign back to work”.

While proffering solution to the problem, the Union leader said “the ball is in the court of the Federal Government, ASUU has not closed its doors to dialogue. We appeal to the Federal Government to do what is needful. “If any meeting should be called, the National officers of ASUU are ready to meet the government to resolve the issue on ground”.

Mandela: Jonathan, Obama And Other World Leaders Mourn

Leaders including President Barack Obama of the United States of America, United Kingdom’s Prime Minister David Cameron and President Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday  condoled with South Africans over the death of the first black president of South Africa, Dr. Nelson Mandela.

Reacting to Mandela’s demise, Obama described the South African leader as “a man who took history in his hands and bent the arc of the moral universe towards justice.”

Obama, who spoke some minutes after Mandela’s death was announced, said Mandela’s life had inspired his own historic path to the White House.

“And like so many around the globe, I cannot fully imagine my own life without the example that Nelson Mandela set. And so long as I live, I will do what I can to learn from him.

“Through his fierce dignity and unbending will to sacrifice his own freedom for the freedom of others, Madiba transformed South Africa and moved all of us.

“His journey from a prisoner to a president embodied the promise that human beings and countries can change for the better.”

For Cameron, with the death of Mandela, a great light has gone out in the world.

He said, “Nelson Mandela was a towering figure in our time; a legend in life and now in death – a true global hero. Across the country he loved they will be mourning a man who was the embodiment of grace. Meeting him was one of the great honours of my life.”

“I watched in wonder as Nelson Mandela had the remarkable capacity to forgive his jailers following… wrongful imprisonment – setting a powerful example of redemption and grace for us all.”

A former American President, Bill Clinton, who occupied the White House when Mandela was elected the first black president of South Africa in 1994, had the closest relationship with him of any of the living US presidents.

“Today the world has lost one of its most important leaders and one of its finest human beings, and Hillary, Chelsea and I have lost a true friend,” Clinton said. “We will remember him as a man of uncommon grace and compassion, for whom abandoning bitterness and and embracing adversaries was not just a political strategy but a way of life.”

A former US President, George W Bush described Mandela “as one of the great forces for freedom and equality of our time”.

“He bore his burdens with dignity and grace, and our world is better off because of his example. This good man will be missed, but his contributions will live on forever,” he said.

Jimmy Carter, the former US president, said, “The people of South Africa and human rights advocates around the world have lost a great leader. South Africa’s archbishop emeritus Desmond Tutu lauded his compatriot and fellow Nobel peace laureate as the man who taught a deeply divided nation how to come together.

“Over the past 24 years Madiba taught us how to come together and to believe in ourselves and each other. He was a unifier from the moment he walked out of prison,” Tutu said marking Mandela’s passing.

Meanwhile, President Goodluck Jonathan in a condolence message to South Africa described Mandela’s death as the loss of one of history’s “greatest liberators.”

He said “Mandela will always be remembered and honoured by all mankind as one of its greatest liberators, a wise, courageous and compassionate leader, and an icon of true democracy.”

He described the former South African president “as a source of inspiration to the oppressed peoples all over the world.”

Mandela’s “death will create a huge vacuum that will be difficult to fill in our continent,” Jonathan said.

“In the course of his life-long epic struggle for freedom, fairness, justice, equity and the human rights of his oppressed people, Dr. Mandela made unparalleled personal sacrifices. The indefatigable spirit which he demonstrated throughout his life will continue to inspire present and future generations,” Jonathan said.

Also, United Nations’ Secretary-General, Mr. Ban Ki-moon in his tribute, sais Mandela was “a giant for justice” whose “selfless struggle for human dignity, equality and freedom” inspired many people around the world.

“No one did more in our time to advance the values and aspirations of the United Nations,” he told reporters soon after Mandela’s death was announced.

Ban said he was deeply touched when he met Mandela in his residence in South Africa in February 2009.

“When I thanked him for his life’s work, he insisted the credit belonged to others,” Ban said. “I will never forget his selflessness and deep sense of shared purpose.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, said Nelson Mandela was of “the most honorable figures of our time.”

He went on to say: “He was the father of his people, a man of vision, a freedom fighter who rejected violence. He set a personal example for his people in the long years he spent in prison. He was never arrogant.

“He worked to mend the tears in South African society and with his character managed to prevent outbursts of racial hatred. He will be remembered as the father of new South Africa and as an outstanding moral leader.”

Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott on Friday hailed Nelson Mandela as “a truly great man and one of the great figures of Africa, arguably one of the great figures of the last century.”
