Asuu Strike Update: Strike Will be Suspended Withing 24 Hours If...

BREAKING: ASUU May Suspend Strike Once Resolutions Reached With Jonathan Accepted
The Academic Staff Union of Universities on Wednesday said the ongoing strike by university lecturers would be suspended within 24 hours once the new resolutions reached with President Goodluck Jonathan on November 4 were accepted.

The union, however, described the statement credited to the Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike, that ASUU was making new outrageous demands as “untrue and absolute lie.”

The union said it asked President Jonathan to facilitate the endorsement of resolutions reached with him and signed by high ranking government official preferably the Attorney-General of the Federation but not a permanent secretary.

ASUU said a representative of the body including the President of Nigeria Labour Congress, Abdulwahid Omar, would stand as witnesses.

The union said it wanted the N200 billion agreed upon as 2013 revitalisation fund for public universities to be warehoused with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and disbursed to the benefiting universities.

ASUU’s position was conveyed by the union National Treasurer, Dr. Ademola Aremu, while speaking with The Nation in an interview in Ibadan on Wednesday.

He said the union appreciated the intervention of President Jonathan but noticed that some of the resolutions reached with the President were not included in the letter sent to the union.

According to him, the supervising Minister of Education was economical with the truth by not telling Nigerians that apart from the N30 billion earned allowances released for university staff, the government was yet to release the N100 billion claimed to have been released.

"If there's more people like that out there, I need them the f-ck out of here," Fiasco said to the crowd after being hit. Later in the video, Fiasco admonished the crowd for not handling the situation properly, and then threatened to go to the next stop on his tour.

A correspondent report that the defectors were formally received into the PDP fold at Keffi and Garaku, the headquarters of Keffi and Kokona local government areas, respectively by the state’s Chairman of the party, Mr Yunana Iliya.
Speaking while receiving the defectors, Iliya commended their decision to join the PDP and urged members of other political parties in the state to also join the party.
He commended their courage of the defectors and urged party loyalists to embrace the new entrants.

How Crazy Female Fan Chased M.I For Over 200 Metres Out OF kano

According to MI, trouble began as soon as he mounted the stage at the venue of the show in the ancient city. The rapper says as soon as he started performing, the lady started shouting his name excitedly.

“From the moment I started performing, she stood in front of me and was screaming, ‘MI, MI’. Throughout the entire show I kept telling her, ‘don’t worry I’m going to bring you on stage’.

“I finally brought her on stage and as soon as she did, she raised up her blouse like she was taking it off and the next thing I saw were her boobs! Immediately, the crowd and bodyguards pounced on her and kicked her off the stage but she was not discouraged.

“Till the very end of my performance she was there shouting ‘MI, MI’. As soon as I came off stage she came for me; men, she was a pretty girl. I managed to make it into my car before she could grab me and as I zoomed off the chase began. She chased me for over 200 metres; it was a nightmare!”

Jonathan Not Threatened By Baraje Faction Defection - Presidency

The governors in the break-away faction are  Rotimi Amaechi (Rivers), Rabiu Kwankwanso (Kano), Murtala Nyako (Adamawa),  Abdulfatah Ahmed (Kwara), Babangida Aliyu (Niger), Sule Lamido (Jigawa) and  Aliyu Wamakko of Sokoto State.

Fielding questions from State House correspondents, the Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters, Ahmed Gulak, said it is a good thing that those that defected have shown the world who they are and where they belong.

He said though two governors, Niger and Jigawa have disowned the defection, noting that the PDP will now be more focused and will not be distracted.

Gulak, however, said that a number of political bigwigs in the parties that formed APC have indicated interest to return to the PDP.

On the governor’s defection, Gulak said: “Well, I know as a fact that five of them say that they will now join APC, but I know two issued statements that they are not part of that, governors of Niger and of Jigawa states. If you are not aware, this is the fact on ground.

“And I believe those others, for a long time I have said it before that their hearts have not been in PDP but its good that they have shown the world that they have taken a stand so that PDP will not be distracted. A lot of people even in the APC, ACN ANPP have contacted me that they want to come back to the PDP and were just waiting for what happened today. And to us, it is a good development”., he said.

Meanwhile, a few minutes after the aggrieved governors made their position known, APC Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State  met briefly behind closed doors with Jonathan. The parley which was held inside the President’s office lasted about 20 minutes.

In the House of Representatives yesterday, reactions of the lawmakers were mixed.

Whereas some legislators hailed the move and said it would help deepen democracy , others dismissed it as an exercise that was long expected.

Chief Whip, Hon Mohammed Ishaka Bawa (PDP,Taraba)said the G7 governors had the right to join  any party they like. He said that their departure from PDP will not affect the ruling party.

He said “As the Nigerian constitution provides, they have the right to freedom of association; they have the right to launch any political party of their choice. Nobody is in PDP by force. You can decide to leave at any time you wish to.

“But what I want Nigerians to know is that PDP will continue to wax stronger despite all that is happening. This is not the first time in PDP; this is not the first time in the political development of Nigeria. I’ll like to take you back to 1983 when some progressive governors decided to leave their party; we have Nwobodo; we have Abubakar Barde, Abubakar Rimi and a host of them who left their party, but what was the result after they left?

Supporting Bawa’s views, Hon Nnanna Igbokwe(PDP,Imo) said the development will only make the ruling party to strategize and focus on things that will make it to meet the needs of the populace who he said are the ultimate decider of who should be elected into office.

But Sani Madaki(Kano,PDP)  praised the move. He noted that they will follow the governors to the new party. He said, “we’ll follow our governors; there’s no doubt about it. We can’t continue to stay and face injustice. This is the moment we’ve been waiting for, and this will eventually change the leadership in the House.

Asuu Strike Latest: Pro Chancellors Orders Lecturers Back To Work

e Committee of Pro-chancellors of Nigerian Federal Universities, on Tuesday, unanimously ordered immediate re-opening of universities across the country.

The communiqué signed by the Chairman of the Committee, Professor Kimse Okoko, was made available to newsmen late Tuesday in Abuja.

The communiqué was issued at the end of the committee meeting to discuss the protracted strike by Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and other issues affecting the Nigerian university system.

The communiqué stated that the decision to re-open the universities was unanimously agreed by all pro-chancellors in the overall interest of all concerned.

The pro-chancellors, in the communique, directed all vice chancellors to comply with the committee decision.

Nigerian Tribune gathered that the decision of the pro-chancellors was predicated on the earlier referendum held by various chapters of ASUU that voted 60-40 in favour of suspension of the over four months old strike.

They expressed dismay that all efforts to resolve the crisis, including the intervention of President Goodluck Jonathan, has failed.

The communiqué recognised “all effort by Federal Government to address the major issues involved in the strike action including the bold and the supportive intervention by Mr President.”

It also stated that the committee noted “with satisfaction the outcome of the referendum conducted in all branches of ASUU nationwide which voted 60-40 in favour of the suspension of the ongoing strike by ASUU.”

The pro-chancellors called for the understanding of ASUU and indeed all staff of the various universities in Nigeria.

This order is coming on the heels of polarisation that has already crept into the ASUU, following the meeting they had with President Goodluck Jonathan penultimate week.

Nigerians were amazed that the emergency National Executive Council meeting, held in Kaduna last weekend, came out with fresh conditions for suspension of strike after it was rumoured that a deal was struck with President Jonathan.

ASUU has been on strike since July 1 and the NEC meeting was to deliberate on the resolutions of various chapters of ASUU on whether the strike should be suspended or not based on the offers by the government.

Nigerian Tribune gathered that the pro-chancellors were aggrieved that even when majority of the members of ASUU want the strike called off, few elements in the union have refused to yield to the popular desire of the members.

Meanwhile, the crisis rocking the University of Lagos (UNILAG) chapter of ASUU, over its continued participation in the ongoing strike action by the union’s national body, worsened on Tuesday as the two factions in the crisis openly traded insults.

The congress, called on Monday, saw a sharp division in the chapter with a faction favouring a pull-out from the strike action, giving a week ultimatum to open the institution.

The faction also promised undisclosed further actions if the ultimatum was not met, after it held a separate congress following the disruption of the earlier one.

Renewed Jos Crisis, 32 Reportedly Dead

fewer than 32 people were killed in the early hours of Tuesday in Barakin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State when gunmen suspected to be Fulani herdsmen invaded three communities in the council.

Police, however, said only 20 people were killed. The incident came less than 72 hours after five people were similarly murdered in Kukah in Shendam Local Government Area.

Our correspondent gathered that the marauders overran Gura Bwok, Fan, Heipang and Foron districts of the local government, killing some of the residents and burning some houses.

It was further gathered that nine people were killed in Gura Bwok, seven in Fan, 11 people in Heipang and five people in Foron.

Several houses were also said to have been razed down in the attack, which was said to be a reprisal against last week’s theft of more than 200 herds of cattle belonging to the herdsmen by some unidentified persons.

It was also gathered that two Fulani herdsmen were killed by the cattle thieves as  men of the Special Task Force tried to intervene.

The state Police Public Relations Officers, Felicia Anselm, said the killing was in revenge against the theft of cows and the alleged killing of two of the herdsmen, said to be Fulani, by the cattle thieves.

She said the police had intervened by deploying units of men of the anti-terrorist squad in the area.

The PPRO said, “Calm has been restored in the place and a unit of anti-terrorism squad and regular and riot policemen, including the STF, have been sent to the area.”
