feels like yesterday’

Wow! It’s amazing how time flies. It’s been nine years since you left us and it still feels like yesterday. I guess it’s because I remember too many things and feel all the emotions like they just happened. I woke up this morning with thoughts and visions of you, wondering what you could be doing right now and the number of new friends and angels you would be chatting with now.

You were always the man of the people; who loved to put smiles on faces, especially mine.

I also wondered what and who you would expect me to be now. I wondered if I have done justice to at least a huge portion of all the plans we had together.

Before I got out of bed I wanted to make sure that wherever you are, there would still be a smile on your face when you see how far I have gone. I nodded my head, smiled and got up because I knew that God heard us those nights we held hands and prayed together, asking for his help in accomplishing what we set out to do, especially in the lives of our children Isabel and Angelica. He has done great things in our lives and has continued to be there for us.

Jaiye, your girls miss you so much and I have made sure that whenever they hear any of your songs, they know it’s you because that voice has remained in their hearts. Isabel still tells me how she knows that her shoe size came from you and Angelica insists that her height has nothing to do with me but owes it to you. Above all they know and will always know what a wonderful and loving father you were. Nothing will ever change that no matter what.

As I always say ‘time does not heal wounds, it only makes the load and pain lighter. Only God can heal wounds’.

Today I am writing this letter to you and I am not crying, instead I am smiling because in my heart I know you are in the best place ever, where your laughter will resonate.

I miss you so much my love and I know that when the time comes I will see you again.

Okay, let me go and face the world now. You are so lucky because you no longer have to deal with all the hate, gossip, backbiting, deception, oppression, sickness, war, accidents, disasters, robbery and all the other things the rest of us have to deal with.
Rest in the arms of The Lord JAY.

Let me go and continue with all the negativity the world brings. My happiness is that I am not going alone, my God is with me all the way.

FG To Pay Striking Lecturers 4 Months Salaries On Or Before Next Monday - NUC

Federal government has made arrangement to pay the striking universities lecturers there four months salaries on or before Monday. This was disclosed today by the NUC chairman in abuja......could this be the beginning of the end of the strike?

Asuu Strike: Strike Has Been Politicised - Edwin Clark

FORMER Federal Commissioner for Information and South-South Leader, Chief Edwin Clark, has called on striking Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, to have a rethink over the protracted strike, pleading that the action has been carried too far.
Clark wondered why the body allegedly rebuffed all entreaties and failed to listen to the voice of reason, even after the highest authorities in the land, such as President Goodluck Jonathan and other eminent Nigerians had intervened.
He made the plea yesterday, at Kiagbodo, during the visit by the National Universities Commission, NUC, to inspect the proposed Edwin Clark University of Technology, located at Kiagbodo in Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State.
Claiming that the strike had been politicised, he said: “Though ASUU may have a reason to embark on the strike, they are carrying it too far. Unfortunately, politics has crept into the system which is making it difficult to call off the action.”
Clark noted that when President Jonathan held a closed door meeting with ASUU they agreed to call off the action, lamenting that the lecturers later reneged on the agreement.
“Our students are suffering and our university education system is failing, hence I am appealing to ASUU to have a rethink and go back to classes,” he added.
The former senator noted that the Federal Government on its part had tried to end the strike, and urged ASUU to accept whatever government had promised to pay, adding that the rest will be settled gradually.
Prof. Essien, Chairman, Standing Committee on Private Universities, National University Commission, Abuja, extolled Clark’s virtues, describing him as a true leader.
He added that the team had inspected the proposed site of the university, stressing that they will convey their report to Abuja and later come out with a clear decision.
Essien, who also pleaded with ASUU to go back to work, added that education was the best legacy the nation could bequeath to the upcoming generation.

Asuu Strike Latest: Fg Must Come Out With Payment Proof, Strike Continues - Asuu

The leadership of the academic staff union of Nigerian university has vowed to continue the strike until federal government comes out with a proof of the payment of the N200 billion said to have been paid into a CBN account.....more details coming soon

Asuu Strike Update: N200 Billion Deposited In CBN Education Fund Account - FG

Federal Government says it has deposited the N200bn promised as funding to universities in an account with the Central Bank of Nigeria.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs, Dr. Doyin Okupe and the Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, Prof. Julius Okojie, confirmed this on Tuesday.

The amount is for renewal of infrastructure in the nation’s public universities.

Okupe, who featured on Channels Television programme ‘Sunrise Daily,’ said from the government’s perspective, everything that needed to be done had been done.

According to him, many of the demands of the Academic Staff Union of Universities have been agreed upon at the 13-hour meeting the union had with President Goodluck Jonathan which ended in the early hours of October 4.

“At the end of that meeting, the government proposed that everything that has been agreed should be put in a Memorandum of Understanding and that the two parties should sign. But the leadership of ASUU declined and said instead of that, they would rather have a letter expressing everything that has been resolved therein, and that will suffice for them.”

Okupe stressed that the attitude of the ASUU leadership showed that the seed of discord and evidence of bad faith already existed.

“It is unfortunate that somebody died but notwithstanding, that cannot be a justification for delaying the implementation of an agreement for 21 or more days.

At a briefing in Abuja, Okojie, who also said the money had been deposited in CBN, noted that the Coordinating Minister of Economy and Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, had confirmed to him that the money had been deposited in the CBN.

ASUU had requested evidence that the money had been released as a condition to suspend the strike.

Okojie, who claimed that ASUU did not seek clarification from the commission, however said, such money could not be distributed directly to universities.

“You don’t disburse such funds to institutions; it is not earned allowance. The minister of finance said since they opened the account, the money had been deposited there. If there was any doubt, NUC is here they (ASUU) could have asked the question,” he said.

The NUC boss also revealed that government had directed vice-chancellors of federal universities to extend the resumption deadline for lecturers to December 9 to allow ASUU members to attend the burial ceremony of Prof. Festus Iyayi.

Iyayi, a former ASUU president died in a motor accident on November 12 while going to Kano for the union’s National Executive Council meeting.

The Supervising Minister of Education, Nyesom Wike, at a briefing in Abuja on Thursday, had warned that any lecturer that failed to resume on or before Wednesday (today) would be sacked.

But Okojie claimed that government was not aware of the burial arrangement when the deadline was issued.

“Council has been directed to shift the deadline to December 9 to allow those who have travelled to come back. That letter was only received yesterday from the burial committee which I also forwarded to the Minister of Education”, he said.

Okojie promised that lecturers that resumed by December 9 would be paid their salary arrears.

“For those who resumed by December 9, their salary arrears will be paid. We can’t pay someone who is on strike salary. In a democracy, those who want to work should be allowed to work,” he added.

Okojie, who admitted that ASUU and the Federal Government discussed the issue of renegotiation, maintained that it was not supposed to be included in the Memorandum of Understanding as demanded by the union.

According to him, either of the parties could call for renegotiation at any time. Asked why the non victimisation clause was not included in the MoU as pointed out by ASUU, Okojie said the issue was not discussed at the meeting with the President, so could not have formed part of the resolution.

He wondered why the union turned around to raise the issue when it “never arose” at their meeting.

The NUC boss claimed that ASUU went away after the meeting with the President with the mind that strike would be called off on Friday only “to come back to say you (government) didn’t include it.”

“We are saying that if there was an issue, it would have been resolved. To come back after three weeks means we are going back. The issue of non-victimisation clause never arose,” he insisted.

He, however, promised that the government would not victimise anybody for his role in the strike.

“Government is not going to victimise anybody. Because of the mood that day, nobody thought about it. The President shook hands with everybody on that day. The letter was written that night, they also vetted it.

“Government will not victimise anybody. If any government is going to do that it is not Jonathan’s government”, he assured.

But ASUU President, Dr. Nasir Fagge, who said the decision had not been communicated to the union, expressed doubt about the sincerity of government.

He wondered why government instead of responding to the letter of the union went public that it had deposited the N200bn in the CBN.

He said, “What they are doing is that they will tell you something when in actual fact they have not done anything. There were previous times when they will call the public on a matter only for us to find out that it has not been done.

If they have done it, what is wrong in them answering our letter? Why are they going to the public when we that they are supposed to respond to we don’t know.”

Asuu Strike Update: AAUA , ESUT Pulls Out Of Strike

Academic activities resumed at the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko (AAUA), on Monday, as some lecturers of the institution complied with the directive by the management of the school to commence lectures.

Although lectures have not started fully in all the departments, a visit to the school campus showed that lectures had started in some of the departments of the university, with students in classrooms.

It was observed that lectures were on in some of the faculties including Arts and Education.

It was also gathered that timetables for lectures for the second semester of the 2012/2013 academic session had been released by each of the departments, to signal the commencement of academic exercise.

Also meetings of the heads of departments in each of the faculties were held to ensure proper courses allocation among the lecturers.

The vice chancellor of the university, Professor Femi Mimiko and principal officers of the insitution went round the campus to monitor the level of compliance to the directive.

Speaking after the monitoring exercise, Mimiko expressed satisfaction, saying the development showed that about 60 per cent of the academic staff were back on campus.

“I am satisfied with the level of response that we have received so far, viz-a-viz the directive that management gave that lectures should resume today.

“I have personally gone round and I also sent my principal officers to go round the classrooms and it was discovered that quite a number of classes held.

“As we speak, lecturers are in the classrooms teaching, yes the students are just coming back to campus, that is not unexpected, but the good thing there is, more than half of the total number of lecturers have indicated their desire to teach and they are all over the place teaching, I hope and believe that from tomorrow, the situation will improve,” he said.

Mimiko said it was a matter of individual choice if a parent chose to listen to ASUU and keep his child at home, adding that there was little or nothing that could be done to that.

Also, students and lecturers of the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), on Monday, returned to school, following a directive by the school authorities.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that the authorities had directed them to resume classes on December 2 and commence preparations for the 2012/2013 second semester examination.

NAN correspondent who monitored the situation at the Enugu and Agbani campuses of the university reported that the students were in their various departments exchanging pleasantries and checking the notice boards.

At the faculties of engineering and management sciences in the Enugu campus, students in their numbers were copying the second semester examination timetables pasted on the notice boards.

The lecturers, on the other hand, held a meeting with the governing council of the university at the Agbani campus on the resumption of work.

Addressing the lecturers, chairman of the council, Chief Chilo Offiah, appealed to them to sheathe their sword and return to classes in the interest of the students.

Offiah thanked the lecturers for attending the meeting and assured them that the council would do all it could to ensure the improvement of their welfare.

The executive members of the ESUT branch of the ASUU did not, however, attend the meeting.

Meanwhile, it was a different situation at the Enugu campus of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), as only a few students and lecturers were on campus.

NAN reported that the few lecturers were in their various offices, while the non-academic staff members were busy working.

Some of the lecturers who spoke with NAN on conditions of anonymity said they were waiting for directives from both the school authorities and the ASUU branch.
